Description

Kim Wayans, Adepero Oduye, Aasha Davis and Charles Parnell star in Dee Rees’s inspiring film that critics hail is “Vibrantly alive! Potently moving and heartfelt!” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). Seventeen-year-old Alike (pronounced ah-lee-kay) lives with her parents and younger sister in Brooklyn's Fort Greene neighborhood. She has a flair for poetry, and is quietly embracing her identity as a lesbian. But whenever Alike's development becomes a topic of discussion at home, her parents’ already strained marriage is pushed to the breaking point. Wondering how much she can confide in her family, Alike strives to get through adolescence with grace, humor, and tenacity – sometimes succeeding, sometimes not, but always moving forward.

For all the youth struggling with their sexual identity, WATCH THIS! It gave me hope and reminded me that I'm not alone in the struggle. We all need to love and be loved.

I originally rated Pariah as good but I as I sat and reviewed it in my head I realized that was unfair based on not being able to relate to the character Alike'. However I felt the emotion from each character. The story line, and acting is exceptional, heartwarming and a real eye opener. This movie made me cry. Might I add I enjoyed seeing Kim Wayans in a serious role. Well done.

When I first downloaded the movie I thought it would be Adepero Oduye stealing the spotlight with a breakthrough dramatic performance. I didn't expect the movie itself to be so incredible. Each and every character affects the life of Alike (the main character) and although their intentions are only made to bring her down, she sees it as only a small bump in the road leading up to her much brighter future. This isn't a story about a girl "finding out she's gay" but rather a story of a family unwilling to accept it and society never being happy for what she is. Alike knows what she is. She knows she is an incredible work of God, and she forgives her hateful mother played by Kim Wayans in a pitch-perfect performance. This is not an entirely sad story, although I did bawl my eyes out during the last 15 minutes, but rather a story of growth and freedom. Watch this movie!!!

Loved, loved, loved, this movie. It made me laugh, cry, and it made me mad at some points. This was the best movie I've seen awhile. Kim Wayans did a wonderful dramatic performance and I loved it. This movie is definitely a must watch.

This movie really captures the internal conflict a young inner city teen faces. Her sexuality has her at a crossroad. This movie shows her battle between pleasing her family and staying true to who she is. Great watch, not for the very young.

Very solid film from first time filmmaker Dee Rees. Thoughtful and realistic, funny and heartbreaking; Pariah was easily among the Shames, Drives, Moneyballs, Beginners, and Dragon Tattoos of 2011. Oduye shines in the lead and Kim Wayans should have garnered a few critic nods as Alike's disapproving mother.

This movie was so awesome! It deserved more recognition than what it got. Kim Wayans who usually does great comedy, did a fantastic dramatic performance as the Mom, and Adepero Oduye had me with her the entire time! I loved this movie so much!

Love this movie it was an untold story of many people in the lesbian community! But I think anyone could relate, we all have had struggles with identity one way or another.
