Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

    Quite superb! Anonymous is definitely a good film for any occasion. The superficial storyline is incredible while the historical relevance and artistic perspective adds depth to the film. The imagery of Shakespeare's work is brought to life in this riveting ensemble of artistic expression.

  • Excellent movie, but read up on the Oxfordian Theory ahead of time

    I watched Last Will. & Testament before watching this movie, and I'm so glad that I did. The PBS documentary explains the rationale behind the idea that the 17th Earl of Oxford was the real author of the works attributed to William Shakespeare, who may have "sold" his name to provide cover for the Earl. Once you have that backstory, the movie Anonymous makes more sense. I'm sure I would have been as confused as some of the other reviewers who gave this movie only 1 star if I had watched this movie cold. Having said all that, I give this movie a solid 5. This story should be part of every grade school curriculum on the history and works of "William Shakespeare."

They say there are two sides to every story, yet they do not mention that there are many stories within every story… To the Dreamers, this will enLighten you.     CameronReese96 obviously didn't watch the whole movie because if they had they would have noticed the multiple plot twists at the end. This was amazing! Probably not factual but I'll let the history buffs fight out the identity of Shakespeare another time. Great acting and beautifully shot scenes. I've seen it twice and loved it both times.

    I stopped watching mid-way through because I didn't get what all the fuss was about. Why does an aristocrat need to hide behind a no-name writer to get his ideas across. It's not compelling enough to warrant a conspiracy theory, much less treatment in a film. The modern theater narration portion made the film look even less sophisticated that it pretended to be. The characters were so insigifnicant (and numerous) that I stopped paying attention.

    Some writers/directors have such a way of complicating a simple story. Why? This movie takes the gold. They assume -and we all know what that means- that we are all history buffs perfectly familiar with all the historical figures in the movie -figures, mind you, the script does not bother to introduce. If you're not one of those viewers, don't even bother with this flick. Now, the only interesting value of it it's the fact that it was shot in a new digital cam by Arri, the Alexa. That's it. But even from this perspective, the movie still lacks appeal. Film, celluloid is still king.
