Description

During his lifetime, J. Edgar Hoover would rise to be the most powerful man in America. As head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years, he would stop at nothing to protect his country. Through eight presidents and three wars, Hoover waged battle against threats both real and perceived, often bending the rules to keep his countrymen safe. His methods were at once ruthless and heroic, with the admiration of the world his most coveted, if ever elusive, prize. Hoover was a man who placed great value on secrets-particularly those of others-and was not afraid to use that information to exert authority over the leading figures in the nation. Understanding that knowledge is power and fear poses opportunity, he used both to gain unprecedented influence and to build a reputation that was both formidable and untouchable.

I was somewhat disappointed in this film. I realize that Hoover was a complex, haunted man and to touch on all of his difficulties would have been impossible. However, I feel the storyline barely scratched the surface. I also think that Leonardo DiCaprio was miscast as Hoover. A very talented actor, his performance in this film did not indicate that. The three stars are for Naomi Watts', Armie Hammer's, and Judy Dench's performances.

I am impressed by Di Caprio's performance in this film. I would give him an oscar for this one. I think Eastwood did an excelent job with directing. I do not understand how come this movie was not a great success in theaters. I enjoyed every minutes of this movie

Hoover lived through some of the most exciting and controversial times in American history but you'd never know it by watching this film. Easily one of the most disappointing and BORING films I've ever watching. Consider yourself warned.
  • Horrible

Horrible script, very boring pacing and the whole gay agenda was way too much on someone we can only speculate and imagine rather than on facts. I was expecting something more on depicting Hoovers great accomplishments but they all came out as if it was all in wrong intention. Can't believe this came from Eastwood.
  • Interesting, but will not watch again.

Dear Clint, you had an excellent career and it's over. Stop ruining your legacy with these make this movie who is trying so hard but doesn't fool anyone. Is the point of this thing to share that he was gay? I did see the whole thing. It's ok!
  • Not great

Dissapointing. I felt like it was more of a gay activist film more than a tribute to a significant historical figure. Not was I was looking for.
  • J. Edgar Snoozer

Worst biopic I've seen since Amelia. Was Hoover really as dull as this makes him seem? We never get past the surface -- in fact, given that many scenes are so dimly lit as to be practically indiscernible, and many feature actors wearing some of the most laughably bad old-person make-up I've seen in a big-budget movie in decades, even the surface is obscure. Eastwood directs this with a stolid lack of imagination that keeps it all at arm's length. A dull snoozer, and surprisingly inept. If you want to know about Hoover, there are books and documentaries out there that give you a much better idea of who he was and what drove him.
