Description

Madea, everyone's favorite wise-cracking, take-no-prisoners grandma, jumps into action when her niece, Shirley, receives distressing news about her health. All Shirley wants is to gather her three adult children around her and share the news as a family. But Tammy, Kimberly and Byron are too distracted by their own problems: Tammy can't manage her unruly children or her broken marriage; Kimberly is gripped with anger and takes it out on her husband; and Byron, after spending two years in jail, is under pressure to deal drugs again. It's up to Madea, with the help of the equally rambunctious Aunt Bam, to gather the clan together and make things right the only way she knows how: with a lot of tough love, laughter…and the revelation of a long-buried family secret.

This coming from a guy who saw the play...while we was still a stupid kid with nothing going on in his stupid little head. Just what kind of family does Medea really have? I mean I know, or hear that no family is perfect. Everyone fights for position. Everyone fights with demons and unpleasant memories, and they often need a break from each other. I know that, and I can sort of imagine it, but this display is the imagination of a three-year-old. In fact, everybody is a three-year-old in this so-called "big happy family." If these were my folks, i think we would all be just fine if we remained fourteen airplane hours apart from each other, with nothing but garbage between us. However, these are NOT my folks! And this family is NOT exactly all families, especially not all black families. Was every person under the roof so miserable and stupid that they needed Medea to straighten them up and get them flying right? That is debatable, I know, but for one guy, I don't totally think so. Everything before this: a Big Boot out the door. This one: BIGGER BOOT!

Perry has really stepped in it this time. The chosen cast shows (and has) no talent and ingenuity. The writing is flat, tuneless, and [dare I say] PREACHY. The humor is as unrealistic as it irrelevant. The idiocy and immaturity does not stop until Madea--who has made no change whatsoever about herself--speaks up. The narrative stalls...as usual. And the stereotyping and cliches continue. Who do you know that carries traumatizing events like childhood rape into a marriage, and shuts out the world and the spouse? (And for alll those years?) It is suprising that the workaholic's husband does not divorce her in light of her dirty attitude. And Byron (Shad "Bow Wow" Moss) can and should notice his potential as a young man without being in the middle of a teenage tug-of-war between two immature and ill-mannered women. One is using a baby for revenge, money, and public humiliation and the other is dependent on a quick fix, from the streets. The matriarch (Loretta Devine, who I am not fond of) is completely helpless and a doubter much of the way through. Where is the father, the patriarch anyway? There are single fathers struggling to keep family and friends together and at bay, too. you know. Another question: how does Madea's family change between projects? Come to think of it, WHO THE [Bleep] ARE THESE PEOPLE???? Why do they even have to wait for Madea to blow the whistle? Families are not immune to dissention or dysfunction--which is no laughing matter. But they are NOT stupid; Stubborn maybe, but not stupid! TP and his all-too-loyal fan base call this picture are perfect cartwheel down a staircase. Well, I call it a MESS. Or in the words of "The Critic" Jay Sherman, IT STINKS.

Critics and everyone giving this film bad reviews and negative comments need to really lighten up. They certainly don't know a good movie when they see one, and Tyler Perry always delivers, by adding comedy and life-changing lessons. Nobody can deliver a film that makes me bust my gut laughing and almost make me lose my breath, and also makes me sob so terribly. The cast is great, the story is solid, and the messages are sincere.
