Description

When philosophical country/western singer Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes is "discovered" in the local lock-up by television talent coordinator Marcia Jeffries, she decided that Rhodes deserves a guest appearance on a TV variety show. The gangly, overly humble Rhodes is an instant sensation, and as he quickly ascends toward superstardom he attracts fans, sponsors and endorsement deals until he is the most powerful and influential entertainer on the airwaves. Beloved by his public audience, they would never believe that he has turned into a scheming, power-hungry manipulator with Machiavellian political aspirations. What Rhodes does not realize is that the higher the rise, the farther the fall; not only does he wind up losing his fame and fortune, but he also loses those who cared about him before his ego took control of his life.

Although prescient in the 20th century, this movie should speak volumes to the 21st century, but is all but fogotten today. Anyone who wants to understand the state of politics today needs to watch this movie.

Andy Griffin is absolutely amazing. His character is so cruel it's hard to imagine him as Andy from Mayberry. Patricia Neal is also outstanding. This is a "MUST SEE" film.

This film has a disturbingly relevant feel to it. Like the 1970s film _Network_, Elia Kazan's film eerily predicts the melding of politics and entertainment and the rise of network demagogues. It could not have been more accurate if it had been titled _The Glenn Beck Story_.

Amazing movie a wonderful contrast to all of the wholesome character Griffith plays in the future. It's nice to see his range since he seldom if ever ventured to the dark side again. A must see.

This movie is great. Andy Griffith gives an amazing preformance as the drunken Lonesome Rhodes, a character very different than Andy Taylor from Griffith's hit sitcom. The movie follows Rhodes' rise to fame and power on television and his subsequent spiral out of control. Rhodes is a demonic and fascinating character and easily one of the most dimesional and evil characters in film history. The trailer provided doesn't do the film justice, don't miss this movie.
