Description

Far from a fairytale, Waking Sleeping Beauty is an unprecedented eye-opening look at the conflict, drama and tension that ushered in the second chapter of Disney's animation legacy - a decade of unparalleled creativity that included The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King. Told by the people who were actually there - Michael Eisner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Roy E. Disney, John Lasseter and many more, Waking Sleeping Beauty is a behind-the-magic look at the people and circumstances that changed the face of animation forever.

This is a great documentary on the fall and rise of the Disney animation studio and a lot of great behind the scenes footage and information. However, it stops at the Lion King and doesn't really go into what a huge success that movie was. I would have liked to have seen more on that and more on the start of Pixar. It felt like a sequel is needed.

I grew up during the disney renaissance and had no idea the struggle the disney corporation went through behind the scenes. There is a touching interview with Alan Menken talking about the death of his writing partner Howard Ashman that made me cry truly a must watch
  • Well told, but not perfect

One of my favorite periods in cinematic history (other than the rise of Spielberg and Lucas) is the second (and last) Golden Age in Disney animation. I grew up with The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin (I didn't come to love The Little Mermaid or Who Framed Roger Rabbit until I got older), so obviously I was interested in how Disney became magical once again after a big slump of mediocre films like The Black Cauldron, Oliver and Company, and The Rescuers. This is a well told documentary and it's in the hands of a good director/producer (Don Hahn, who produced both Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King), but it's not perfect. The film concentrates more on the executives rather than on the actors. I do realize that Roy Disney, Michael Eisner, and Jeffrey Katzenberg would be the heart of the film, but I wanted a little bit less of them, and more of people like Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, Jodi Benson, David Ogden Stiers, Jeremy Irons, and especially Robin Williams. It's a great documentary, definitely worth seeing, but don't expect perfection.

This is not your grandfather's documentary shot on a 8mm camera with long discussions of what you DON'T want to hear. This is a true masterpiece that may be on of Disney's best films. You immediatly get sucked into the world and hardships and laughter of these people and to see these people who you've never heard of and some that you definatly have go through this is one of the besty stories of all time. 4.9/5

This is a jewel in my movie collection. What a treat to see such an inspiring story and inside glimpse into a key time in Disney history. Beautifully made documentary. I feel like I am going on the journey with them each time I watch this. A MUST for any fan of animation and/or Disney!

This documentary is semi in-depth look into the ushering in of the Disney Renaissance from 1984-1994 with Roy Disney bringing in Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg. It is very interesting because it looks into how Disney animation went from a joke or the stepchild essentially to a revolutionary company in a matter of ten years. I'm definitely watching it again because it is just so interesting. I feel like I definitely have a better grasp on who the characters were during this time of growth and tension. Plus, I have a huge admiration and respect for Howard Ashman. I never knew or appreciated the amount of genius and artistry he put into Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin before he passed away. Definitely a film checking out if you are or are not a Disney animation fan so that basically means everybody! I feel the film is a great length, but could have had a few more details and stories added. I think Don and Peter should make another documentary about the next ten or fifteen years chornicling the fall of Disney animation starting with Pocahontas because I am very intruiged about that as well.
