Ondine

I thought it was a very heart felt movie. Wish more could be just like this one.

Magic happens. Everything that the legends say comes true in this very beautifully directed fantasy-turns-reality drama. It's so subtle that it can be missed as you are easily drawn into the tragic lives of the multiple societal outcasts in this film. Messed up Syracuse is trying to turn things around but he is still living in a tragedy. So much all-too-believable trauma is happening that you almost miss the magic unfolding. Dark serendipity happens in this movie and shows that even sad and seemingly hopeless lives can still get a happily ever after.

I am shocked that this movie received such high ratings from viewers. I found it stunningly dreadful after the first few scenes- from the obnoxious, precocious Annie (who would have been severely traumatized by the events that unfold the final mystery, not to mention several severe accidents and an abusive alcoholic mother), to the Ondine woman cavorting around in flimsy garments, with an alcoholic suitor turning violent on her when he is smashed out of his mind leaving her stranded on some bleak island (and this is meant to be romantic?) Give me a break. A few titillating scenes of Ondine's legs steering a boat and wet clothing sticking to her naked body is about the only drawcard for most to bother with this tosh. I am not normally so cynical and like a good fairytale romance as much as the next person, but this was an insult to my intelligence. There were so many weak and unbelievable moments in this movie, from the soaked swimming dress suddenly dry and billowing behind Ondine to the "coincedence" of her stumbling across the "silkie coat." Ah....fuggedabahdit! Don't waste your time.

A movie with the truth of reality, yet hints at the purity of happiness.

JUST LOVED THIS MOVIE!

I would recommend this movie because it introduces the audience to a fairytale that few have heard of and then weaves the fairytale into the characters lives.

This is a low-key movie that becomes romantic, then real, and then romantic again. Colin Farrell turns down the voltage, and is quite believable as a struggling Irish fisherman. There's a plot twist that I didn't expect, but it connected most of the dots in the story. Not fast-paced and not demanding, and I loved it.

Beautiful, haunting, and breathtaking. The Irish "Splash" with meaning and intelligence. Don't miss it. It will stay with you long after the credits roll . . .

You will not understand the words. A darn shame for what seems to be a beautiful movie. Blame iTunes for wasting your time and money. What I could hear, with headphones and max volume, of scenes with Ondine and little girl were precious, priceless. Music was wonderful, photography gorgeous, you just can't hear the words, the mumbling, so frustrating, and after a time I gave up and stopped watching. So this would be a non-renter, choose another.

Paced with just the right amount of suspense mixed with beautiful landscape of true Ireland, this movie is well worth watching. Colin Farrell plays his part perfectly and demands a newfound respect as an actor. All the cast was mixing it up with the right amount of gusto and believability. Again get this and add this to your collection of Irish Gems.
