The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone

The plot summary is not quite right. This film is about an aging actess who flees her failing stage career. On their way to Rome her husband dies and she remains there to avoid going back to a critical and fickle New York. She is immediately thrust into the world of the wolves, rich older women who pay for young handsome escorts. Lotte Lenya plays the pimp who barters all sorts of people, from aging aristocracy in need of money to the gigolos like Paulo (played by Warren Beatty). The character of Mrs. Stone is stronger than she seems because she won't fall into the traps that are set for her. Eventually both Mrs. Stone and Paulo give up what they did not want to give up to keep the relationship going. Lotte Lenya is a scene stealer and her lines are classics. I much prefer this version than the Helen Mirren remake.
