Description

In Japan, foreign migrants are shunned by mainstream society. Taunted by the yakuza, they live in constant fear of being discovered and repatriated. Into this perilous world ventures Steelhead (Chan), a humble tractor repairman who has traveled to Tokyo in search of his missing girlfriend, Xiu Xiu (Xu Jinglei), who vanished into thin air shortly after arriving in the city. It doesn't take Steelhead long to learn just what kind of hardships Chinese immigrants in Japan endure at the hands of underworld gangsters and foreign crime syndicates, and upon discovering that Xiu Xiu has adapted a Japanese identity and married up-and-coming yakuza chief Eguichi (Masaya Kato), the two men form an uneasy alliance. Over time, Steelhead earns the respect of his fellow Chinese immigrants by establishing a place for them to gather. But the dark side still beckons to Steelhead, because after helping Eguichi dispense with a powerful rival, he is granted full control of Shinjuku's most popular nightspots. Resistant to the allure of the criminal lifestyle, Steelhead discovers a new love and opens a tractor repair business just outside the city. When Equichi begins using Steelhead's former compatriots as pawns to front the yakuza's drug trade, the vengeful immigrant returns to the city determined to exact justice, even if it means destroying the future of the woman he once loved.

  • Not Your Ordinary Jackie Chan Movie

    By John Storhm
I bought this title because it was a movie I had not heard about, and it was recent, a 2010 release. The preview looked interesting so I wanted to see what this Jackie Chan movie was about. The movie was well done and I liked it, HOWEVER, it was too gory for me to watch more than once. I liked the fact that Jackie Chan was playing a character with mixed motivations who was torn between the worlds of good and evil. When the character played by Chan interacted with the evil world, the blood and gore flowed (not by his hands but by those around him). It certainly was not half as gory as most Quentin Tarantino movies, but the fact that I could even write this sentence about a film featuring Jackie Chan says volumes about the movie. Having now watched the film, I wish there had been an iTunes rental option.

Was expecting a martial arts film and got a gangster movie. In many ways, it's a Chinese version of Scarface ! Only difference is unlike Tony Montana, Jackie Chan's character does not get corrupted by the money and power.

I already had a great deal of respect for Jackie, this just made it rise even more. This movie is nothing like his others but has an amazing story line. Way to go Jackie!!
  • A dramatic change...for the better?

I initially came into the movie not expecting a whole lot of difference from Jackie's previous action movies, with only a basic understanding that this was one of his newer Honk Kong films and it featured Jackie Chan in Japan. Well, what I got was really surprising (AND, to answer the question, for the better)! It features Chan portraying what can easily be his most provocative role yet; an illegal chinese immigrant who must fight for the survival for himself and his brethren in the heart of the Tokyo underworld. Let me tell ya', it's definitely not no hollywood, kid-friendly 'Spy Next Door'. There are several scenes of graphic violence (quite shockingly too at times) and a brief sexual scene involving a couple of prostitutes. Also, those who expect a martial arts film with spectacular stunt work will be disappointed, but that reason alone should NOT shy anyone away from this film! What it is is a heavy crime drama, in a similar vein as a Scorsese movie, with Chan playing a character who wouldn't think twice about murdering somebody in cold blood for the sake of his people. Anyone who's seen much of his previous work, or only just a few of his American movies will know that this is a big stretch for the Chan-man who's quirky, "Mr. Nice Guy" routine is ingrained in our mindsets. Somehow, though, he made it work! I would definitely recommend this movie; It's not Jackie Chan's "finest hour", but it sure as hell is one intense one!

I never thought I will see Jackie Chan in such a role! That is see the man take a beating & can hardly fight back...Like what the hell? Where is Jackie; then I realise, oh: his character on this one is different. Kind of took me a while to get used to that but when I settled with it, I enjoyed the movie! The acting is superb (as expected with most Chinese cinema anyway) Chan gives a completely new face to his person. Maintains the natural good/nice guy who wants to die for humanity, but then adds a dimension that is more realistic than the traditional Jackie Chan. That is, ready to get his hands really dirty, for the greater good. The usual Chan will rather beat the living daylight out of the bad guy, while this Chan won't and can't actually. Great movie in my opinion!

I don't get it. I mean he stared in all theses top notch modern day movies and now this. I don't doubt Jackie but this movie looks cheap. And no martial arts in it? That's enough for me not to wana see. Sorry Jackie.
  • One of Jackie's fine acting.

I admire how Jackie transitions from an action star to true drama acting. This film reflects Jackie's works at his very best.
