  • This is the worst cabaret music I've heard!

Even now, I don't know how I sat through the whole of this one. I don't even know why. Except perhaps I was still solely dependent on the opinions and reactions of other people, including the phony ones. There is a subtle concept known as call-and-respond. Nobody, especially not the so-called stars in this joint, takes advantage of it. How in the world can the singer, the songwriter, the actor....or even the filmmaker for that matter expect the audience to respond to his call if he cannot respond to a call himself??? I have seen my share of Broadway hits in my time, but this is nothing more than the worst cabaret music I have ever heard.

As if "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and "Why Did I Get Married?" weren't pitiful and phony enough!!! Look at this piece of so-called work. Same stalled narrative. Same stereotypes and ignorance. Same insecure teenage behavior. Same preachy, subjective nature. Same everything. April spends a large majority of the story feeling sorry for herself. But why? She has other things to think about, right? I'm sure Sandino has a much bigger story than just being the "man who comes to restore." He darned sure wouldn't regularly take dehumanizing slurs and gestures sitting down. And the chemistry between the two: WHERE IS THE ENERGY? WHERE IS THE CONNECTION? (Not counting the sobby foreground or background blues) It's a lifeless pity date, that's what it is. Then there's Jennifer and the two younger brothers? What is it that they're running from? Where and what are their personalities? What are their goals and/or interests? Pre-teens and teenagers maybe without a clue about most "grown-up" things; but they are NOT stupid. Don't get me started on April's [overly] perfect best friend--or on the insertion of Gladys Knight and Marvin Winans. Nobody is perfect or flawless, especially not like that. Don't they have days when they've had enough, too? Even punks like April's perverted lover have to have something more to them. More than just being the bad apple for no particular reason. (And he had to have shown hints of his cowardice before, which April would have caught in an instant.) What an enchanted world TP must live in. Seriously, leave the singing to the singers , and the acting to the actors. Plus, the soundtrack (specifically the on-screen ballads) is so obvious about who it pertains to. Same annoying mistake made in "Daddy's Little Girls". NOTE: This does not mean I don't get the message; I really do see the point. But the projection thereof is so been-there-done-that, and it's insulting and degrading. If it doesn't put you to sleep first, it will later leave you saying, "What did you call me?" The same can be said about the play by the same name. Anything else? Well, life seems to stop and drag to the sync of the alleged characters' problems. In real life, life goes on whether you're flowing with it or not. For a guy who constantly promises to take you places you haven't been before--or at least havent' looked closely enough into--TP really doesn't take you far at all. Especially not with this [fabricated] excuse for a story. More reason why I'll never take directions from Perry, let alone Madea, again.
