Description

There's nothing like a first love to bring family tensions to a boil in this riveting dark comedy! In a startling performance, Adam Scott (Step Brothers) stars as Caleb Sinclaire whose emotions go haywire when his brother, Peter (Alex Frost, Drillbit Taylor), brings home new girlfriend Emma (Brittany Snow, Prom Night). As the dysfunctional family is propelled into chaos, Caleb and Emma confront their mutual distrust and attempt to resist a growing sexual attraction.

  • More dark than comedy

There are humorous elements, but the film is really more drama than comedy. The characters are really messed up and disturbed. It takes dysfunctional family to a whole new level. I found the film interesting though. There's no reason to like the characters, but you do anyway.

A thanksgiving weekend home from college with a girl that gets busy with her boyfriend’s own brother; in the room next to him- even after all the names and nasty things he said to her. She either has no self esteem or she just turned out to be exactly what he said she would be...
  • Nasty, spiteful little film

The main character, Caleb, hates his life and himself, for clichéd reasons. The character of his younger brother is so undeveloped as to be a blank space. His brother's girlfriend exists as an object of sexual attraction for both of them, and victim of Caleb's abuse, but has little to say for herself. Her behavior seems designed to prove the premise that if broken, nasty men are mean to them, women will be interested. Big surprise at the end to see that Neil LaBute was a producer. This is not remotely a comedy.
  • Comedy? really?

I couldn't get into the plot of this story, the driver of the main character and why he was so bitter and angry. I watched about 45 minutes and turned it off. Didn't care about the main character or what happened to him, and if a story can't make you care about a character or at least want to understand him and what happens to him, then the story is lost. Too many gratuitious F words, too much unexplained anger, too little comedy. It could have been so much better with a better script.
  • Dark, depressing, and certainly not a comedy by any measure.

I couldn't make it through. Too dark and depressing. Nothing funny about it at all. Story line moved at a snails pace.

I watched this movie for the first time about a month ago, and I've watched it at least ten times since. I've gotten all of my friends into it as well. Adam Scott is brilliant in this movie, and the other actors fit perfectly as well. I know "Caleb" is slightly a jerk throughout the film, but you just have to feel for him once you get to know the character. Not only is the acting superb, but the music and the setting give it the perfect feel. It's definitely in my top 2 favorite movies. I could just watch it over and over again and I would recommend it to almost anyone.
  • Oedipal

Very interesting movie that grew on me as it went along. This is not a wacky movie, despite the trailer. Basically it's a movie about an Oedipal complex, and the main character waffles between self-loathing, distrust of others and a desire for purity. The director handles all of this intelligently, and gets a genuine story out of it. Yeah, the movie tidies up just a little too quick at the end, and there was so much smoking I felt like I was watching a Humphrey Bogart movie. The characters are great, though. Kudos to Adam Scott. I've only seen him in Parks and Rec, and shows some serious acting chops here.

I went in to this expecting very little. This movie was great!!! meaningful dark comedy with a few different plot lines. I have been renting and buying on itunes for 5-6 years and have never reviewed a movie and this one is worth reviewing never heard of it until it popped up on my genius recommendations and It was great! I wish I bought it not rented it!! If you are unsure of what to watch and like a movie that is down to earth with a meaningful plot line along with some dark humor this is the movie for you. if not then you wont enjoy this quite so much. Best!
