Description

One of the most remarkable biopics of all time, this inspiring film tells the story of Jackie Robinson, the famous black baseball player of the 1940s who broke racial barriers while playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The film follows Robinson’s career, starting with his college days as a track star at both Pasadena College and UCLA. After graduating, Robinson tries to find work as a coach, but is turned away due to his race, leading him to join the army and later, play in the Negro Baseball League. Robinson’s extraordinary skills on the field attract the attention of the general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey. Thus begins the remarkable career of a truly inspirational black athlete whose dreams of overcoming the stereotypes around him helped him to ignore the racial prejudices of the time and become one of the greatest baseball players that has ever lived.

This is an amazing movie, but don’t get this black and white version. Get the restored COLOR version with the red white and blue cover and the BIG picture of Jackie on the front. It’s so much better to watch. That version also supports the Jackie Robinson Foundation. I give this b/w version 4 stars, but the COLOR gets 5 stars.

I was blessed with friends from the early baseball days and their esteem for Jackie Robinson was second to none. They told me first hand stories and this movie, staring Jackie Robinson as himself, backs up everything they said. I give this only 5 stars because they will not all me to do more. It is a true story. It is real. It is well done. It is also very educational and should be a part of the history curricula of every high school in America. I am a white southern lady and I approve this message 100%.

I enjoyed this movie. I like it's honest, unpolished feel. The Jackie Robinson Story shows a little bit about the way things were at that time and how people actually thought they were right in their predjudice. I just wish the movie ran longer than an hour and seventeen minutes. There's so much more to tell. That and well, I just love baseball movies.
