great example of modern bad sci fi. it is fun and awful.
  • had the raw materials to be something much better, but ended up just being a cliche fest.

disappointed in the end product. this was (to me, at least) slightly surprising, since this movie had budget enough to purchase a cast of 'real' actors, normally capable of decent acting efforts. if this off-the-shelf-components cliche-festival would have been played with a bit of intentional camp or underlying humor, this could have been a really fun ride. as it is, though, it took itself (especially its characterizations) way too seriously, tried to convey too much gravitas in what is essentially an overdone theme (save the world from evil, against impossible odds), and ended up feeling like a near-two-hour cinematic interlude from a video game. (the CGI certainly seemed like it was lifted straight from a cutting-edge blood-n-guts PS3 game.) i'd have given this movie three stars if i had any intention of watching it again. (1 is avoid; 2 is something to have on in the background while doing something other than watching it; 3 is watchable/rentable; 4 is notable; 5 is classic.) it receives two stars because i would only turn this movie on again if it was a) on free TV, and b) i just wanted some typical 'hollywood white noise' in the background.

The visuals were interesting, but not enough to overcome the HORRIBLE PLOT. I can honestly say I didn't care about any of the characters. I only finished watching because I paid to watch it.

Have seen a lot worse, and a lot better. This is one of those SciFi Saturday Specials that falls in between; not quite a pile of crap - but a far cry from the smelliest pile that's ever been produced. What I would have appreciated was primer, something a lot more clear than what's provided to us at the beginning of the film. So that's what I'm going to do for you here. If the premise sounds ridiculous - it is. So you need to make up your mind as to watching it based on the primer itself. Ready? Okay here it is: For some unknown reason an alien enemy has decided that it needs to destroy mankind. Now, normally that would be via war or invasion. But in this case the aliens have decided to use a manufacturing plant that pumps out zombies that were once humans. These zombies are very difficult to kill, very strong, and come equipped with their own arm pike/blade/pick-axe. Their mission is to destroy man and those that somehow survive their initial assaults are then pulled back to the manufacturing plant for conversion to new zombies. Got that so far? So when this first happened mankind was nearly destroyed. But with one last ditch all-or-nothing supreme effort - humanity fought back and won a stalemate by burying the manufacturing plant and sealing it off. We now jump ahead a few thousand years. The previous global destruction bought about vast changes in civilization and (importantly) most of what happened before the aliens attacked has been forgotten; mankind has rebuilt themselves to a version of the world circa 1915 - a time when we're literally reliving World War I. Trench warfare, doughboys, kaiser inspired troops, gas attacks, etc, etc. A few notable differences are that the world is run by corporations not governments and they have steam powered flying ships. Got that? Okay, so during this continuous corporate battle for resources their troops accidentally release the seal holding back the zombie manufacturing plant and then all hell breaks loose - literally. Again on the verge of being wiped out - a small band of heroes sets off to end the threat once and for all, led ostensibly by a monk/priest of the old order. The same ones who led the battle against the aliens the last time. They are the only remaining believers - the rest of world, especially the corporations, think they're quaint ridiculous religious nuts. But they held the records from the last battle and are the only ones who have the secret to ridding themselves of the zombie machine. That's your primer. Now it's on you to decide whether or not you want to watch the film. I will add this - the director seems to have borrowed much from the same team that brought about the Angelina Jolie film "Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow" in that much of the film is digitally created with real actors working against a green screen. But that's not a bad thing. The cgi driven scenes are surprisingly good and mostly believable. The storyline is an another thing altogether. I will say that Thomas Jane does a pretty good job as the hard drinking, war weary veteran enlisted to stop the zombies.

I won't deny it, this is one of the best movies I've seen in the past three years. But hey, that's just me. There's obviously no budget but the acting is good, the effects are bang for the buck and the story is a conglomerate of so many other great tales within the genre that it tricks me into beleiving it's totally original. I love this damn thing. Make more. The simple fact that there's actually a Rotten review about this little known flick (16% or not) should say it all.

There are many plot holes in this story. Yet despite it all, it is well acted and well edited. Constant action and constant animation. It is an extremely well thought-out alternative world which looks like a blend of World War I and Aliens. If you crave Sky Captain with a serious edge, this is a movie for you. Plus Ron Perlman. Perlman is one of the best speculative fiction actors around. And he does not disappoint here.
  • If you rent every other zombie, mutant, war-killing movie then why not rent this one?

This was not the worst movie I have seen or the best. If you want just non-stop blow-em-up fighting and such, then it's fine. It was fast paced and did keep my attention the whole time even if was not near as good as the Resident Evil series. If you like to see any zombie, mutant or war killing in your films, you will be entertained.

When a mindless, inexplicably evil force threatens a clichéd and war-torn future, only a team of 8 two-dimensional characters can save their world from destruction. I don't like to be too harsh of a critic of films. After all, as the Asylum has shown us, sometimes we can make a film that eschews plot continuity, innovation and decent acting for a good laugh and possibly a drinking game or two. However, just minutes into this movie I realized how bleak the outlook of the next hour and a half was. First and foremost, the look of the film is extremely off-putting. I would love to give the director props for trying a look that hasn't been seen much in movies since the advent of Technicolor, but the colors are so desaturated and the contrast so low that detail was a bit too difficult to make out without cranking the brightness on my monitor. The pervasive use of the digital stage makes the entire movie seem cheap, although the props, clothing and make-up were all pretty well done, as was the camera work. All in all though, the movie was a struggle to even look at, much less enjoy on any deeper level. Right from the exposition in the beginning, the dialog is stale and doesn't do much to make the story engaging or the characters alive. Despite this, the movie would have been far more tolerable had the actors been able to breathe life into the characters. Absolutely no one had any personality beyond "morose and violent". You'd think that with a cast that includes Thomas Jane and John Malkovich would at least deliver a few good lines, but everything is delivered without vocal inflection or facial expression. It was as though the director threatened to beat people to death with their own severed legs if anyone showed any signs of having thoughts or feelings. The result is a pack of unlikable plot-bots who meander from one death to another, at some parts even watching each other die gruesomely with no visible reaction at all. If this is simply a product of their environment - life in this future is absurdly violent, after all - then it wasn't properly introduced in the movie. The one diamond in the rough was Anna Walton, who plays a mostly silent lady-monk-ninja-warrior. Not only did she have the best performance in the whole cast, even going so far as to move the muscles in her face when surprised, but she's mind-numbingly gorgeous as well, even in the colorless muck of the film screen. I rented this movie well expecting, and wanting, a crappy Scifi flick. I wanted terrible dialog, young actors overplaying their parts as monster victims or heroes, violence, nudity and a predictable ending with a witty one-liner to send the evil monster off to hell with a grenade in its mouth. That would have at least been fun. Instead, I watched otherwise good actors drag their feet through a painfully thin plot that takes place in an uninteresting and poorly fleshed out world about which nothing at all worthwhile happens. Don't let the mediocre star rating and good reviews fool you, this movie should be totally avoided even if you like watching bad movies.
