Description

The "Blue Max", a coveted medal for achievement in flying, is ruthlessly sought by Bruno Stabel (George Peppard), a poor-boy German soldier who climbs out of the trenches and into the aristocratic air force. He is met with prejudice by the other contestants; wealthy snobs who look down upon his low economic stature. When he claims the title, he earns the respect of the General, and the General's wife, who wants to repay him in ways that the General might not appreciate.

This is the film that really made George Peppard. While his fun side peeks out here and there for an instant, his performance is so intense, soulless and riveting that it could be called one of the bravest performances of any actor I have ever seen. You believe that his character is truly ruthless. Technically there are a few minor issues, such as the action of firing the guns does not keep up with the rear projection, but these are of little consequence. Historically, this film appeared not long after Peanuts artist Charles Shultz started drawing Snoopy having fantasies about being a WWI fighter pilor. This film was later followed by an equally realistic film, The Battle of Britain. Between these two films, fighter pilots of these period held almost as much fascination in popular culture as the space program and the Beatles. While Peppard appeared in a number of films and in several TV series (the detective show, Banacek, and the popular adventure series, A Team, it was The Blue Max that made his name.

Don't listen to critics who say it's dull because those people are only satisfied with Big Budget CGI war films! Watch it,Live it,Love it. Hoo-ah!

Good gap filler if you want a bit of shootemup entertainment. Ursula was looking good...they don't make them like her or rachael anymore. All in all, it was good on a long flight.

Very dull... The planes are great, but the acting will put you to sleep. Rent The Red Baron or Flyboys instead.

Great flying scenes that are real. They will never make like this again. Classic.

One of the best movies about aerial combat in WWI, also very realistic in details and realism of the time.
