Description

Wicked social satire about a sexy male hairdresser that does more than hair. Warren Beatty lampoons his own womanizer reputation in this feature concerned only with who is "doing" who and the superficial appearances of the upper class of Beverly Hills set against election day for the 1968 Presidential election.

No other film makes me laugh like “Shampoo.” Lee Grant, Jack Warden, and Julie Christie are sensational. Beatty, as ever, underrated. Even the small parts are perfectly cast. Script by Beatty and Robert Towne is first-rate, sharp as a tack. Add Hal Ashby who ties it all altogether with an un-showy, gimlet eye. Now how about replacing this outdated print with the new restoration from Criterion?

If you are looking for a "good movie," mileage will vary. If you want a fun excuse to get all sociological and think about power imbalances, this thing is an amazing document of its time. This is the perfect "background video" for bachelor pad cocktail parties. Looking back – and past the distraction of the slapstick, it is a little startling to see Beatty in the bank loan scene. The transformation of the financial industry has made that bit a newer (and even better) joke. This film is New Hollywood in adolescence talking about LA at the time of New Hollywood's birth. Watch this goofy, "dumb movie" and publish a thesis, seriously. It is a hilarious truth that very vain and superficial things often pull the strings in a big way.

Absolutely fabulous. I'm a girl for big, healthy hair, shop talk, gorgeous male beauticians and gorgeous evening wear. Soirée, drama, break ups, motor cycles. Did I mention gorgeous male specimens?? I loved it!!! Light hearted with just enough glamourous drama and laughter.
