Description

Journey into an explosion of sight, sound, song and superb storytelling as brilliantly conceived by animation innovator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, The Lord of the Rings, Wizards). From a turn-of-the-century immigrant vaudevillian to a rock superstar, "American Pop" is the story of four generations whose lives revolve around the beat of American popular music. Featuring a mind-blowing soundtrack bursting with the hit music of The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Mamas & The Papas, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pat Benatar, Lou Reed, Bob Seger and more. Packed with energy, excitement, electricity and enthusiasm, Bashki's work is a ground-breaking, kaleidoscopic animated trip.

Amazing embodiment of the EVOLUTION of Rock-n-Roll. Great story lines with-in each 'generation' that fantastically captures an electrifying distinct moods. Buy it, save it, watch when you're stoned… thats all I gotta say about that.

Loved this movie since I was a child, and as an adult it amazes me that it has never been made into a full-on, live-action film. Wonderful story, amazing soundtrack (featuring a rare Bob Seger piano version of Night Moves), great voice casting and rotoscoping. I can't say enough about this movie. Do yourself a favor and watch this!

What a Film! My Favorite work Ralph Bakshi has done. The animation will stun you, and the music is superb. This film truly captures the look of our country like never before. One of the most forgotten American greats!

Aside from the method of creating animation from real life scenes, I didn't enjoy the movie. The music selection was limited to a number of obscure tunes by a few great artists. Come on! How could Bakshi completely ignore Mowtown and the Funk Brothers? How could he ignore Disco? Well, okay, maybe not disco. Also, the sporadic use of real life shorts was distracting. I couldn't become immersed in the animation.

This movie is a jewel, and everyone needs to know about it. This is a one of a kind movie about one family and their passion and love for music. I remember watching this on a VHS, and was thinking "Man, I've never seen a movie like this!?!?!" If you love music, this is your movie.

From the first time I saw this film I knew it was far and away Bakshi's best work. A wonderful telling of the American Story from a music point of view. The only part I disliked was the ending Bob Seeger tune, I felt there would've been so many other songs that could've been chosen instead. All in all an incredible tale of the blossoming of the American music scene.
