Description

Sam Elliot drew waves of accolades for his sensitive and sexy portrayal of the aging lifeguard who's compelled to reassess his life and career as a professional lifeguard. To keep things status quo or pursue things status-conscious - that's Elliott's dilemma. It's an agonizing decision compounded on one side by an adoring beach groupie (Breakdown's Kathleen Quinlan) and on the other by a former high school flame (Fatal Attraction's Anne Archer) who's game for rekindling, but only if he's serious about trading in his swimsuits for three-piecers.

  • An Epic Film

For those of us with some actual history in film, this one was an epic offering, with the opening volley from Sam Elliot. It was a classic of the time and the genre. Of course, the children of the modern age of video games and special effect worship would have absolutely no clue about this work. I trust this will rank right up there with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in the eyes of future critics. It's truly that good.

Great movie for many reasons. It was filmed where I grew up and use to surf. The sound of the ocean during dialog was mellow and well done. The actors were excellent, especially Kathleen Quinlan's character. She was a typical young teenager on the beach trying to grow up too fast. The H.S. reunion made the story even better and gave life to the whole scenario. The only weak spots were the rescues in totally calm surf with no riptides at all. That part was very phony. The love story with the old flame was also very well done.

I love Anne Archer and she is good in all her movies. Its amazing how good she is even with a poor script. It was fun to see beach goers without cell phones. Also the styles and cars from the 1970”s were interesting.

I saw this movie in 1976 when it first came out and was instantly impressed! Sam Elliot's character Rick faces the ultimate struggle in this movie. And as Anne Archer's character Kathy so bluntly asks him: "do you move up, or out?", we then see how Rick arrives at his decision, which is to do what's right and what works..for him. I love this movie, and in my opinion it's one of Sam Elliot's absolute best performances!
