But the movie starts in the Salton Sea (in California), not the Sargasso sea. Aside from that its a great Saturday afternoon monster movie. Not sure that being in HD makes the viewing experience any better, but still fun to watch.
  • No, 5 stars isn't too much for a black/white scifi movie about giant snails

I agree with you urbie that this movie is awesome! It's effects maybe considered cheesy by today's standards but the story is actually fun to watch. I think that if you love monster movies of the 1950's you will in all likelyhood love this movie as well.

Ok, maybe you think 5 stars is too much for a black/white sci-fi movie about giant snails. But to this child of the 1950's this is one scary flick. With almost no special effects it takes some serious imagination on the part of the viewer to be frightened and shocked by this movie. It's magic though is that takes me back to the first time I saw the movie as a kid. It was scary, especially since it takes place not far from where I grew up. The movie, by the way, isn't set in the Sargasso Sea. It takes place in California's Salton Sea. There used to be a Naval Station there where scientists conducted strange experiments. It was plausible. Anyway, suspend your disbelief and put your imagination in gear.
