Description

A fascinating look at the last, tragic Russian monarchs; the kindly, indecisive Czar Nicholas and his reclusive, fear-haunted Czarina. The story follows their problems from the onset through the introduction of Rasputin to the Russian Court, to the Czar's abdication and the family's execution at Ekaterinburg on July 16, 1918.

  • BEWARE - Butchered Film

As others have already reviewed, the low rating is not for the film itself, it’s because the version iTunes has here is NOT the complete movie, in fact there is an hour’s worth of entire scenes missing from it, it’s supposed to be 3 hours 8 minutes long. DO NOT purchase or rent from iTunes. Go instead to Amazon Prime Video or anywhere else to get the full unedited film. It’s a shame because this is a very good film on the last Tsar and Tsarina of Russia based on the famous book by Robert K. Massie. I made the mistake of purchasing it from iTunes and only later did I realize that this is the old TV broadcast copy heavily edited with lots of missing scenes from it. I found the complete remastered fully restored movie at Amazon Prime video.

The one star is not for the movie itself. The one star is for the version available here. This movie has fantastic cinematography, yet the version for rent here on iTunes is cropped from its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 to fit a normal HD television. This is a mistake, and if this is a regular occurence on iTunes movies then I would not rent from them any more.

Liked the movie- loved the book! Can't get enough of either.
  • Excellent film, very poor sound track quality wrecks it.

I highly recommend this film, but find another source. It either needs restoration or apple has butchered the sound track. We have a moderately expensive home theater that could not save the sound. We had turn stay on the volume going up and down ever few seconds. Not worth renting or purchasing...too bad, a great film wasted.

I never really took much interest in Russian history before I saw this movie. It was simply amazing. I just got the book and am beginning to read it. This film is definately a must see. As a general question, would you guys prefer a socialist government or a monarchy?
  • Good Movie BUT...

The movie is worthy of 5 stars but the version available here is severely edited and does not flow well. Over an hour has been cut out of the movie. I recommend getting it elsewhere and get the full close to 4 hour movie. It is well worth your time.

It's a great movie. I've been looking for productions that inculde Janet Suzman, and am currently trying to find her performance of Lady Macbeth. If you know about this, please tell me... This movie is great and is definately something you should purchase.

Having read Robert E. Massie's book from which the series of events this movies is based on (as well as history) id say that this movie is fairly accurate. There were only a few parts that were changed that i had notice from what really happened but nothing serious. I would say this is a much watch for anyone interested in the Romanovs. I love how they chose to leave the ending to the viewers idea of what they think could have happened being that when Massie wrote the book there were only rumors of what could have happened to the Romanovs the summer of 1918. Anyway this movie brings another sense of understanding to the story that text cannot bring. The movie leads up to the ending of the Romanovs lives and brings insite on how they lived there lives daily and the choices they made that brought them to their end. I would also suggest reading Robert E. Massies book for those who want to learn more about the family before the end.
