Description

Come along on a spirited fifteen-year journey that follows songwriting sensation Denise Waverly (Illeana Douglas) who struggles to escape the shadow of pop-music icons and ultimately emerges a singer in her own right. From the last 1950s doo-wop era to the psychedelic seventies, Denise's experiences in life and adventures in romance stir her genius and inspire the rich melodies that sustain a music empire. In crafting the hits the whole world sings, Denise draws on her relationships with the men in her life: a brilliant but self-destructive composer (Matt Dillon), and her songwriting partner (Eric Stoltz). And in a hilarious and touching role, John Turturro plays the producer who provides Denise support and guidance during three decades of trials and triumphs. From Executive Producer Martin Scorcese and celebrated writer and director Allison Anders, Grace of My Heart is the lyrical tale of a remarkable woman striving to find her own voice in the male-dominated world of pop music.

surprisingly original, refreshing, moving, stirring and most of all entertaining little gem of a movie. I enjoyed the music so very much and have not been able to find soundtrack offered anywhere--that's the only complaint I have. The music is really catching.

I love this movie..music has gone thru so many transitions..this shows how music, singers, bands and songwriters evolved to what it is today..I love the music..Grace goes thru alot, and yea the pool scene always gets me..the actual song Grace of My Heart just kills me, and so does the other song that she sings earlier in the movie, I can't remember the name but it was heavy!.
  • Wonderful Movie About The Music Industry circa the 60s

I have always loved the few movies there are about the music industry. "Grace of My Heart" is set in the early to mid 60s capturing the Brill Building period to A faux look at the making of concept albums like "Pet Sounds". Illeana Douglas, in a role reminiscent of Carole King, is simply wonderful. Possibly her best role to date. John Tuturro plays a character that is a mix of Phil Sceptor and Eric Stoltz is possibly an homage to Gerry Goffin. Matt Dillion plays a Brian Wilson type character taking on the mental challenges Wilson experienced while crafting "Pet Sounds". The music is simply stunning led by an Elvis Costello lyric penned title track that salutes the emergence of the singer songwriter s that would dominate the 70s. A simply engaging INDI movie that is as true to the story of the music industry as any movie has been.

Once upon a time, there was a healthy music business. Writers wrote, publishers published, producers produced, and yes kiddies.....singers actually SANG. The Brill building in NYC was the hotbed of creativity with all of the above going on inside. This movie is a wonderful parody of those long-lost innocent times with many real artists' characters cleverly portrayed, though much exaggerated. Special merit must be given to the original songs written especially for this film, and to the absolutely mesmerizing voice of Kristen Vigard who provides the singing for Illeana Douglas' character. For anyone who grew up with the music of the 60's, this is a must-see. And as always, John Turturro absolutely steals every scene he is in.

I just love this movie. The music is amazing, and why oh why is there no soundtrack available? It's killing me! The music makes this movie, and then the story is second, the characters are all wonderful. John Turturro especially is heartwarming, funny, with some tough love for the main character to pull her out of her darkness. It's just such a touching journey, and so glad her mother does get it in the end, the talent her daughter has. Ugh, but the soundtrack, where is it?? Need to hear these wonderful songs again and again...

I watched this movie over 10 years ago and have lost count how many times I've watched it since. The characters and story line are so believable it could easily pass for a biography. This movie is about one woman's search to find her worth and make her mark in the world despite the many times she's side tracked by those she loved and failed her. Her character is extremely likable and you can't help but root for her from the very start. The story moves along nicely and is never boring. I can't say enough good things about this film. The music, casting, acting, directing, and editing were superb! The secondary characters were also amazing, especially John Turturro's roll. The one man who never let her down and showed her the true meaning of friendship. I hated for it to end.
  • Glad this is finally available!

Great, quirky movie.....marvelous music, some fun cameo's. Anyone who loves the music business can relate. It's all about the scene at the pool at the end :)
