Description

Based on the novel by Claire Cook, a 40-year-old divorcee (Oscar and Golden Globe-nominee Diane Lane, "Under the Tuscan Sun") throws herself back into the dating scene after a two-year "dry spell." When her sister writes a personal ad for her that includes the criteria "must love dogs," the divorcee has to borrow a canine to support her sister's exaggeration. What she doesn't know is, her prospective date (Golden Globe-nominee John Cusack, "Runaway Jury," "Serendipity") is doing the same thing, because he doesn't own a dog, either. Also starring, Elizabeth Perkins ("Moonlight and Valentino," "Finding Nemo"), Dermot Mulroney ("My Best Friend's Wedding"), Golden Globe-nominee Christopher Plummer ("Alexander") and Oscar and Golden Globe-nominee Stockard Channing (TV's "The West Wing").

  • Badly acted predictable waste of time

The ending is set up in about the first 2 minutes. The acting is extremely bad and distracting. The lead female character has no dimension other than trying to get a man. In fact no characters seem to have any depth to them. I don't mind films in this genre but this is a terrible example.

This is the kind of rom-com that makes me appreciate the witty banter and excellent writing in OTHER films. Here are some fab actors--all of them (except for the annoying bff of Cusack) but together with this script it was just flat. I kept hoping it would get better and it seemed like it could have and should have, but didn't. In comparison to The Proposal, Maid of Honor, Love Actually, Leap Year...those are 5 star..this is mediocre at 2-3. rent if you are desperate. it's not painful..just not fun.

I really wish I could say this was a good movie, but I just can't. Whoever did the casting for this movie failed in a big way. Decent to good actors in their own rights, but horrible together. Diane Lane's character seemed VERY forced to go for Cusak's character and it just wasn't a good match.... Cusak in High Fidelity with Iben Hjejle was a MUCH better match on the screen. The story had some possbilities, but just fell flat. Whenever families start singing the Partridge Family theme and the main character's friends turn out to be gay, you know it's just another 2 bit Hollywood script that's been recycled. I hate to say it, but the criticts were right on this one.
