Description

Charlotte Gray's World War II assignment could be the first of many. Or her fatal last. The people she meets could be friends or insidious traitors. Trained to be an undercover courier for England, Charlotte straps on a parachute and falls from the sky into Vichy France. There she will assist the French Resistance in its defiance of Nazi occupation. Only one of three couriers will return home. Cate Blanchett enthralls as Charlotte, who goes behind enemy lines while keeping secret her personal mission to find her lover, an RAF pilot downed over France.

Genius suggested this movie. I was kinda surprised. I had not heard of it before that. Anyway ... The movie is a war movie taking place mostly in France during the Nazi occupation. Charlotte Gray (Cate Blanchett) is a lady who has gone to France to work as a spy and while there loses and gains something. I really liked this movie for several reasons. One is that Cate Blanchett is a terrific actor. The emotions that Blanchett carries and expresses, you feel yourself. Generally speaking, you can't go wrong with her movies. A second reason is that it is well done in terms of visuals and setting. One other reason is that - story wise, the movie successfully manages to maintain a constant current of tension. It is a war movie so that is to be expected. The tension is not overbearing, but it is steady. I never got bored. Lastly, there are themes in it that get you thinking, in particular courage and love. Gray's experience with love made me a touch wistful however (---Spoiler Warning !!! -->) I must say, I think the movie ended in just the right way.

Cate Blanchett is not only one of the very best actresses of our day, she is one of the greatest in the history of film. She captures so much emotion and feeling in her expressions as an actress that you literally do not think she is acting, but is truly the person she is portraying. That is such a rare gift as an actor or actress. She is a gem, and we are so privileged to enjoy her every role on the screen. Very few woman have her grace and elegance as an actress and as a person. Thank you Cate for the wonderful influence you have in the lives of millions of people, and for sharing your amazing gifts with each of us.

I think this is a beautiful story of selfless love. And it is original with complex (and sometimes haunted) characters who are portrayed with enough realism and beauty to make the film worth watching.

World War II movie with a twist...a woman hero...and which of her two lovers will win her heart. Gorgeous settings where horrors of war unfold. Choices made as to who will live and who will die. Engrossing right to the final moments.

I found the film sweet but flat in a Hollywood way. The drama seemed diminished by the forced lighting and staged appearance of things. It felt like everything was being shot on a sound stage. There was a terrible absence of the feeling of authenticity. The director's handling of Ms. Blanchette, as a gorgeous, red-lipped, coifed object, distracted from the terrifying reality of the story. The movie seemed directed for framed perfection, rather than the tough reality of the story. I swear the camera was tied down. It rarely seemed to move---wide shot, close up, two shot, wide shot, dramatic close up, hold, hold, hold, two shot, wide shot, etc.. Natural, fluid camera work would have helped. It felt stiff and amateur, and/or "old fashioned." No ground breaking here. The story deserved better. And, oh, oh, oh, those accents! Someone should drop-kick that voice coach.

Beautiful cinematography, and romantic depiction of French country side during Nazi occupation. Cate Blanchett was mesmorizing, beautiful, and captivating. The story was good but a little slow at times. A great epic drama to rent. Over-all four out of five stars.

I loved this film. I love the emotion and intensity. You route for her all through the movie. Cate is so beautiful and her portrayal of Charlotte Gray was superb. Billy Cudrup, although I never saw him in any films only on gossip blogs he's really good. A talent of an actor. It's also a love story and a tearjerker or two... This is one of Cate Blanchett's best films that went under the radar. I rented this movie, I'm now going to buy it. It's a keepsake for a Cate Blanchett fan, like I am.
