Description

Adapted from the novel by Nicci French, Chinese filmmaker Chen Kaige makes his English-language debut with this erotic thriller. An American Web designer Alice (Heather Graham) while living in Illinois falls for Adam (Joseph Fiennes) a ruggedly handsome mountain climber. Bored with her dreary love live, Alice takes advantage of a chance meeting with Adam at a stoplight. Sparks fly, and before too long the couple move in together and Adam proposes. Following the wedding their heated romance begins to take on hints of mild S & M and Alice realizes that she knows very little about her new spouse. The story takes on ominous undertones when she discovers that his previous fiancée died under mysterious circumstances. Alice continues her increasingly disturbing investigation when she uncovers allegations of rape and more missing lovers, bringing her to answers she may not be ready to accept.

Okay not the best acting, not the best film but this is HOT - better than porn. Joseph Feines is SO sexy in here - a mature woman's fantasy. Heather Graham is a good foil for his eroticism. She's sort of an "every woman.". If you want erotic romance and mystery - very worth your time and money.

If you like Heather, she is good, actually hot in this. Nothing wrong with a film in London and she is hot. Ok, could be better but certainly worth watching.
  • When there is nothing else to rent....this will do.

The acting was so horrible, that I kept wondering if it was intentional. I thought that possibly director Chen Kaige was trying something new....something we americans weren't quite used to. Then I realized, no, in fact it's just a very bad movie with untalented actors. Heather Graham and Joseph Fiennes have zero chemistry and it made their love scenes clumsy and a bit revolting... I grimaced when they kissed. The plot twist was obvious especially given the lack of 'big name' actors. All in all, wholly uninteresting. Though, I didn't have very high hopes for the film, I rented it just watch Joseph Fiennes on screen for an hour and half. So, I got what I wanted. And if you should happen to find yourself with absolutely nothing better to watch, then this will do.

Lame, terribly acted, hard to watch- and not because of the "mild S & M" theme, but because the sex, even the kissing looks more like parody than believable. Lame.
  • I wouldn't doubt it if you thought the book was better.

It thought that the movie was a little entertaining, but was unsatisfied with the acting. Heather Graham was a bit out of her realm. It was tough to keep a straight face when you had to watch her act. I say rent it and only once.

First of all, let me start by saying that the trailer might give too much away if you want to be shocked and thrilled by this. So I am warning you to not watch it if you want to be intrigued by the premise. I read this book a year to two years ago and I was enthralled by the story. It not only is mysterious, but I did not see what was coming and I am very keen on picking up plot twists. The book is definitely a favorite of mine as far as mysteries go; and, in a way, it is a story of romance as well. Somber and filled with an extremely well-written narrative, I would recommend the book to anyone. As for the movie: it IS my favorite movie of all-time. I have a definite bias for Heather Graham, however, because I think she is a phenomenal actress; and she hits this part right on the head. As Alice, she is a smart woman who has a successful life, but is naive (in a good way and is in no means stupid) and turns astray from it all when something more thrilling can come along. I'm sure anyone could relate to the premise of an affair: they've known someone who's had one, etc. The rest of the cast is amazing as well, especially Joseph Fiennes as the creepy Adam Tallis. Is he innocent or is he guilty? Bad or good? When it comes down to it, I believe that this movie is mis-understood and falls into the Heather Graham curse: anything she is in is deemed a failure or terrible (which I don't believe is the case). It is a definite underdog and deserves a lot more respect than it is given! Finally, I would like to end by saying that this movie has the best score I have ever heard and the best ending for a movie that I have ever seen. Additionally, if you have read the book: it takes quite a few liberties that (I believe) make it an even more interesting premise! So, I would say FOR SURE buy this! I don't believe you'll regret it!
