Description

Nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Picture and winner of Best Supporting Actress for Geena Davis (TV's "Commander in Chief," "Thelma & Louise"). Starring Davis, Academy Award-winner and Golden Globe-nominee William Hurt ("Syriana," "The Village") and Academy Award- nominee and Golden Globe-winner Kathleen Turner ("War of the Roses," "Body Heat") in a romantic comedy-drama about a reluctant travel writer whose world is turned upside-down when his wife leaves him. Co-starring Bill Pullman ("The Grudge," "Igby Goes Down"), Emmy and Golden Globe- nominee Ed Begley, Jr. ("St. Elsewhere"), David Ogden Stiers ("Lilo & Stitch," "M*A*S*H,") and Amy Wright ("Crossing Delancey," "The Dear Hunter"). Based on Anne Tyler's best-selling novel and directed by Academy Award-winner Lawrence Kasdan ("Dreamcatcher," "The Big Chill"), Siskel and Ebert call this "one of the year's very best films.... Great performances by William Hurt and Geena Davis... a masterpiece." Judith Crist hails it as "enchanting... a sophisticated mix of tears and laughter."

one of best films i've seen. I think to really appreciate it you have to have had a tragic loss of a loved one, before their time, or at least have the empathy and heart to realize what it is to be human. I've always loved the musical score, the casting and performances. This film reminds me of Ordinary People, another touching film dealing with loss and regaining the will to live on anew.

No pace, no pulse. This could have been made into a half hour movie and would have been much better.

I simpy do not understand the rave reviews of this film and the endorsement of the movie industry awards mystifies me! William Hurt's character in this movie is bereft of any personality and while he initially attracts sympathy over the tragic loss of his child, he seems devoid of any emotion whatsoever, and it soons becomes clear why his wife leaves him. What is then unclear is what attracts the Geena Davis character to this individual is entirely beyond me. It is listed as a tragic comedy, yet it was not until the end of the movie that Hurt actually breaks into a smile. Fortunately i rented the movie rather than did wasting 10 dollars to buy it!

This film was released when Lawrence Kasdan and William Hurt were at their respective career peaks and the second of their collaborations as director and actor. Not your typical romantic comedy or melo-drama about loss, but an original mix of both with powerful emotions and images. This film has its own pace, real life, and it unfolds as such in a way that grows slowly after time. The acting is really amazing with William Hurt and Kathleen Turner demonstrating again (first in Body Heat) what a great dramatic team they make, but it is the unlikely performance from Geena Davis, which essentially defined her comedic roles going forward, that is really astounding. We are rooting for Muriel everytime she is on the screen...not the protagonist of the movie. Her performance, along with the chemistry with Hurt, make this an amazing journey of a movie, where nothing really extraordinary happens to us, but monumental changes happen to Macon (Hurt). One of the best adapted screenplays from a novel, for those who have read it, it is soooo on the mark. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning about loss, redemption and learning how to love (and who to be in love). 5 stars
  • How it really works

This is how love works in the real world. It doesn't make sense, it isn't pretty, it is simply something that is needed in life. I love the unglamorous quirks of each and every character in this film. No one is perfect, there is no true hero or heroine. Each character is just as wise and just as messed up as the other. Mesmerizing is the best way I can explain this wonderful piece of film. But then, this movie follows the book perfectly, and anytime a film does that it is bound to be great.

Geena Davis' performance is daring - so completely raw and unattractive in the character's neediness. What is most amazing about her performance is that it doesnt seem like we would see such a brave performance from a celebrity of her stature these days. I guess I would compare it to Halle Berry's performance in Monster's Ball. But if I remember correctly this is one of Davis' first films and she seems to give it everything she's got. Her performance also reminds me of Holly Hunter's great performance in "Broadcast News". This film is truly affecting and moving; the tone and the depth of sadness and pain that hangs over this film has stayed with me since it's original theatrical release. Beautiful filmmaking.
