Description

A successful syndicated cartoonist (who acts out the adventures he later infuses into his cartoon-strip character, "Bash Brannigan, Secret Agent") is dedicated to living the bachelor life, complete with a devoted English butler-valet-confidante...until he awakens one morning after a wild stag party, only to discover that he married the sexy, sensual Italian beauty who popped out of the cake and barely speaks English. What's more...she doesn't believe in divorce. Now, how does the ultimate bachelor get rid of her? With the perfect murder scheme, of course!

There is some charm here and Jack Lemmon does his best with the material, Terry Thomas narrates sarcastically throughout which should be funny and Virna Lisi is absolutely gorgeous! This should have been a great comedy but the results are pretty tame in a TV movie sorta way. The period sets are fun so there is that aspect for entertainment. The aspect ratio is accurate but not the Panavision scope you would expect for a movie with such big stars. No doubt many will find it pretty sexist, but it is "of its time" so there really should be no complaint in that respect. Worth a rent, but I wouldn't purchase it for my library.

I'm a woman and I love HtMYW! This was Virna Lisi's first English-language film and I'm amazed how well she captures its tone and spirit; a wonderful pairing with Lemmon. The look of the movie is great, the supporting cast a joy, and the pacing crisp. A fun time all around. Gloppitta gloppitta!

Overall a masterpiece. Great story line and a prolific plot. Jack Lemmon best overall performance of portraying the American male of the 50,s and 60,s. Great shame it can't be purchased.

As a woman I found this movie completely offensive. Thank God we've evolved passed the day and age where a woman's only option was to get married, because she wasn't allowed to have a job in "a man's world". Gentlemen, trust me, we have no desire to trap you into marriage, especially if you're like any of the male characters portrayed in this movie.

Jack Lemmon is one of the greatest comedic talents in cinema history. His delivery on everything is unique and hilarious, and in this film, he proves his genius once again as a bachelor who doesn't want a wife - even after he wakes up with one! With the gorgeous Virna Lisi as his sweet, innocent Italian bride, this film never stops with the laughs. A must-see comedy classic!

One of the best, If not THE best of the sex comedies of the 60's. Great cast, all the way from Jack Lemmon to Eddie Mayhoff as his hen pecked lawyer. Even the musical score is very good. I can remember my Dad letting me stay up late to watch this with him on the late late movie, just because it was that good.

I first saw this film on TMC a long time ago and fell in love, it's a shame it rarely gets airplay. A great comedy with a good cast and a well-rounded plot to keep it all together.
