Description

Directed by Academy Award winner Robert Redford, the story begins after two determined students at a West Coast University, Arian (DEREK LUKE) and Ernest (MICHAEL PENA), follow the inspiration of their idealistic professor, Dr. Malley (REDFORD), and attempt to do something important with their lives. But when the two make the bold decision to join the battle in Afghanistan, Malley is both moved and distraught. Now, as Arian and Ernest fight for survival in the field, they become the string that binds together two disparate stories on opposite sides of America. In California, an anguished Dr. Malley attempts to reach a privileged but disaffected student (ANDREW GARFIELD) who is the very opposite of Arian and Ernest. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. the charismatic Presidential hopeful, Senator Jasper Irving (CRUISE), is about to give a bombshell story to a probing TV journalist (STREEP) that may affect Arian and Ernests' fates. As arguments, memories and bullets fly, the three stories are woven ever more tightly together, revealing how each of these Americans has a profound impact on each other and the world.

The quick start forces us to be on our toes right away. Director Robert Redford gives us pieces, but he doesn't give use the whole pie. When Tom Cruise wants Merryl Streep to work on his story for him, I can't help feeling like I am part of the mission. The challenge of writing a better story than Merryl Streep, while obviously impossible, is tempting. Too tempting to ignore. So we have no choice but to embark on this fool's errand. Thankfully, throughout the movie we are given many sides of the debate, and we can even fill in the blanks at the end. Be prepared to think, ogle, grin, and cringe throughout this thoughtful thriller. If that does not convince you to see it, then consider how good Robert Redford looks in denim, and multiply that by 92 minutes.

the movie's message was kind of lost in it's own telling. honestly i can't pinpoint why. maybe it's the film's over-emhpasis of self-righteousness while pushing a democratic agenda which could be seen as hypocritical. the dialogue was brilliant but it just failed to deliver any punch (except in the two soldiers cases), it was bland. not boring, bland. a few tweaks, and it could have been great. it had all the tools, just no mechanic.

By the tone of most reviews, I am guessing that most reviewers like most polictians, never set foot in a hostile land. Very thoughtful movie. LTC USAR/Brown University

This movie is not for people who are looking for dumb action or dumb drama. If you can understand the concepts than you will love the movie no question. If you do not than you are going to say it was boring or has illogical concepts. Personally I loved the movie and i recommend this movie to people who likes to see movie question the world.

If you want to be preached to for an hour and a half by a bunch of self rightous nitwits who think they are deep thinkers, this movie is for you. I certainly noticed that the main characters weren't the ones defending their country by putting their lives on the line. They stayed home in their comfortable offices and dispensed advice. Honestly, if it were a CD it wouldn't even make a useful frisbee. Don't waste your money unless you are in the mood to get a lecture.
