Description

George Sand was perhaps the most celebrated novelist of the early nineteenth century and its most notorious Bohemian, better known in her own day than even Charles Dickens. Frederic Chopin was among the greatest musicians of his age. A prodigy who rapidly gained a legendary reputation all over Europe as both a pianist and a composer. IMPROMPTU is the comic and tender tale of how Goerge Sand and Chopin met; of how Sand recklessly pursued Chopin; how Chopin resisted Sand's advances; of how, despite the best and most mischievous efforts of many of those around them, they eventually fell in love.

Love period movies, but this was so disappointing- especially considering the cast. A promiscuos woman who dresses like a man, treats people like garbage and leeches off friends and strangers. What an example to her fatherless children.

This looks like a good movie, but can anyone tell me if it's a good movie? I'm 13 years old and I was wondering if this is a good movie to watch?

I intended on watching this love story with my girlfriend but it just so happened that I had the pleasure of viewing this one solo. Would have been more enjoyable had I been sitting with someone special. Great movie, but I did not get absorbed into the characters' story lines too deeply. The soundtrack was to me sufficient for the regular joe, but I love classical music like Chopin and Liszt in this movie, but you would hope to have more of a developed soundtrack in a film made during Chopin's time.

Despite a stellar cast and great source material, this film fails to do anything noteworthy whatsoever. The actors, writer, and director all underwhelm. Judy Davis is both creepy and uninspired as Madame George Sand, and her supporting cast portraying artists (Chopin, Liszt, Delacroix, and others) are laughable--particularly Hugh Grant, using a ludicrous Polish accent. Bernadette is one-dimensional and underused as the Countess d'Agoult, Liszt's mistress. The only bright spots in the cast are Mandy Patinkin as Alfred de Musset and Emma Thompson as an air-headed noblewoman, who go over-the-top and bring some real life to their scenes. The director and writer are no better. Using real quotes from the artists in odd places, they simplify these people into incredibly superficial states. They also seem to replace romance with obsession, with both George Sand and her ex-lover Mallefille stalking the objects of their affection (however, when Mallefille does it, it is only viewed as dangerous and unstable). The plot is that of a comedy, not a romance (the only time the movie succeeds is when it tries to be funny), and the direction does not help with this at all. Giving no emphasis or real feeling to any scene, it all washes out into blandness at the end, leaving the viewer dissatisfied (or actively deriding the film). All in all, this is a poor and forgettable attempt at an inspiring period piece.

I was looking for something along the lines of Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, etc. Alas, this is more like watching a Jerry Springer show in a 19th century British set. Sorry I bought it. DELETE'd it.

I really did not like this movie at all! It was not what I expected - not a classic. Should have passed

I love this movie so much. It's kind of historical fiction, considering the events of the movie never happened, but at the same time the characters are (for the most part) realistically portrayed. I think this is possibly Hugh Grant's best performance as Frederic Chopin, and Julian Sands is also brilliant as Franz Liszt. The movie is hilarious, and classical music fans will love the soundtrack!

This movie was absolutely wonderful. I would reccomend it to anyone who liked the character of Kate Hepburn in the Aviator. George Sand's portrayal is nearly identical in personality. Also, anyone who liked Pride and Prejudice will love this movie as it is very much in the same lieu. The music throughout is breathtaking, and the story itself is amusing.

I got this because I like Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson and other reviews were good. This movie has it all -- romance, humor (sometimes a bit twisted), sweetness, revenge, music, and beautiful arty setting. A great cast makes it very enjoyable to watch. You get a glimpse how the well-off lived in that time period, the social norms that dictated actions and simple human nature. It's not deep but certainly entertaining all the way. Worth the rental or purchase if you like Grant and Thompson.
