Description

The Salem witch trials of 1692 are brought vividly to life in this compelling adaptation of Arthur Miller's play, directed by Nicholas Hytner ("The Madness of King George"). A group of teenage girls meet in the woods at midnight for a secret love-conjuring ceremony. While the other girls attempt to cast love spells, Abigail Williams (Winona Ryder) wishes for the death of her former lover's (Daniel Day-Lewis) wife. When their ceremony is witnessed by the town minister, the girls suddenly find themselves accused of witchcraft. Soon the entire village is consumed by cries of witchcraft, and as the hysteria grows, blameless victims are torn from their homes, leading to a devastating climax.

This is a really well done movie, more of a thriller than a drama I would say. Daniel Day Lewis and Joan Allen are just incredible.
  • Amazing movie!

The trailer makes it look like a dramatic romance movie, but it's so much more. I would recommend renting and/or buying the movie.

thanks to the movie and watching it multiple times I got an 100 on my english midterm which is 90% on "The Crucible" my favorite but tearjerking scene is the ending before John, Martha, and Rebecca are hanged when they recited the lord's prayer to prove they aren't witches

Ignore all the kids complaining about their school assignments. The screenplay was done by Arthur Miller himself, so it's all practically identical to the original play from the 60's with the exception of a few unimportant lines. Overall a great movie--talented actors and amazingly written story (as expected).

This movies shows the hysteria of the witch trials and how bad they actually were. Even though this is fiction it is one of my favorite plays and movies about the witch trials because it shows just how bad hysteria can get. I'm only 17 and just read this play a few months ago and fell in love with it :) I suggest reading the play and watching the movie and in this case the play goes right a long with the movie.

Well I watched this in my English class and I thought it was alright. I love the story but I just couldn't take the movie seriously. I mean the the whole thing was kinda laughable. Not a horrible movie but not very good.

If you have a chance to view the extra features of the film, you will hear Arthur Miller, the author, say that the movie was almost exactly what he envisioned while writing the play. With that explanation, it is hard to discount the movie at all. The acting is amazing and the content is powerful. The way the characters are presented lends to a more complete film. While plays are designed and written for the stage, this one makes the film almost better than the real stage performance.
