Description

An extraordinary motion picture, Ordinary People is an intense examination of a family being torn apart by tension and tragedy. Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore star as the upper-middle-class couple whose "ordinary" existence is irrevocably shattered by the death of their oldest son in a boating accident. Timothy Hutton is the younger son, struggling against suicide and guilt left by the drowning. Judd Hirsch is the empathetic psychiatrist who provides his lifeline to survival. Mary Tyler Moore gives a riveting portrayal of the inexplicably aloof mother. Robert Redford’s achievement as director, after more than twenty years as a superstar in front of the camera, earned him an Oscar®. Superb performances and masterful direction complement the award-winning screenplay, based upon the novel by Judith Guest.

Wonderfully well written and acted. One of the best films about American families every produced.
  • Heartbreaking and difficult to watch

The performances are universally great especially Hutton. The deconstruction of a family suffering a horrible tragedy and how each member is damaged is certainly not for all tastes. Among the heartbreak of examining loss, resentment and grief are flashes of wisdom mainly from Hirsch's turn as a therapist trying to get to the heart about what is really destroying Hutton from the inside. It's a difficult film to watch, especially when the revelations are exposed and the rug is pulled out once or twice, but film fans, people interested in psychology and even those that have dealt with loss themselves may want to try watching it at least once.

Don't order this movie until iTunes get it fixed. The last part of the movie is out of sync with the picture. The Movie it self was wonderful. But is a real disappointment because of the sync problem. I have ask iTunes to fix this for the past 3 to 4 months and said they would but have not. This is the 2nd time I re-bought the movie

We watched this in my Family Systems Theory class as a case study in Bowenian Theory. I actually enjoyed it from both an entertainment and academic point of view. As a therapist that works heavily in trauma treatment, I found the family's reaction to Buck's accident to be spot-on and to show a humanistic understanding of trauma that was way ahead of its time.

I watched this in my Psychology class at the end of the semester and it was a great way to go out. The film is beautiful and touching and dramatic. I was moved for weeks afterward. I feel that this one of Robert Redford's best.

Intelligent, touching and emotionally charged. Robert Redford's "Ordinary People" is anything but ordinary. As told from the perspective of Conrad (Timothy Hutton), a troubled youth plagued with guilt over a family tragedy he is determined to make his own. Feeling disconnected from his peers and parents he befriends his psychiatrist (Judd Hirsch) and together they set out on a journey of self discovery that will shake the delicate fabric of not only his life, but of everyone around him.

This movie is wonderful! It has a way of grabbing you and keeping you there for the ride! So simple yet has such a statement! It's hard to not be apart of the movie and feel what is going on. I think in a way this movie represents so many of us and problems in our own lives! This is a must see!
