Description

In this box office comedy smash, God (played by the one and only George Burns) comes to Earth to spread the Good Word, but has a hard time convincing his chosen messenger, John Denver, an assistant manager of a supermarket, who He really is. Denver must in turn prove it to his disbelieving family as well as the rest of the world in this wonderfully delightful family classic. Co-starring Academy Award-nominees Teri Garr ("Tootsie," "Young Frankenstein") and Ralph Bellamy ("War & Remembrance"), Paul Sorvino ("GoodFellas"), Donald Pleasance ("Halloween" series) and songstress Dinah Shore. An Oscar nominee for the screenplay by Larry Gelbart ("Tootsie"), directed by Carl Reiner ("The Man with Two Brains").

George Burns was a wonderful funny-man! This movie is utterly delightful. John Denver is surprisingly quite competent. I remember this movie well and fondly. Well-worth seeing!

It's a playful look on how God would interact with man, at times captivating but mostly absurd especially when it comes to big questions, such as "Why is there suffering," and so on. Love George Burns, but can't figure out why John Denver (aka cousin Oliver from the Brady Bunch) was cast with Teri Garr? A great concept for a movie if there was some intelligence behind it, but hey, it's a Carl Reiner film.
  • A fun, quiet movie

Oh, God! is the kind of enjoyable film that doesn't dominate the Top Ten lists, but is a cozy little pleasure you indulge in from time to time. The main attraction here is George Burns, whose affable persona and friendly demeanor makes you wish he really WAS God. The movie itself is similarly inoffensive, raising some affirmative ideas on the nature of man and the divinity while going out of its way to avoid offending anyone. If there is one big flaw in the movie, it's that the first two-thirds of it putters at a very casual pace, focusing a bit too much on John Denver's struggles than anything else. But the reward for your patience comes in the last act, a memorable conclusion which reaffirms the promise that things CAN work out if everyone puts a little faith in each other...
  • This is not even a B movie.

These "Oh God" films were all bad. But John Denver had NO acting ability. And the script was horrible. George Burns was boring.

Great film, but I never understood why Donald Pleasance got such a high billing in the credits since he appears in only a couple of scenes as a rather minor character.
  • Underrated!

This movie is so warm and heart felt and cute and fun! It provides a comforting message to life. Watch it, you will feel so good. The court room at the end has the best quote. It makes you believe in your dreams and a better way. "No matter how hopeless, helpless, mixed up and scary it all gets... It can work." :)
