Stand and Deliver

This will always be one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie continues to speak to kids of all generations. It tells them that your upbringing and the neighborhood you come from, or what you are known for stereotypically should not decide your fate. Always reach for the skies with an unrelenting mind set, and you can accomplish anything, even if it may seem unlikely to most people.

Great movie. A must watch

An interesting, well-acted movie although, as an educator, it never rang true to me. In real life, the majority of those kids did, in fact, cheat on that test! A few even admitted as much. Someone passed around the wrong answer- which is why the testing company challenged the results. They were probably cheating on most of the rest of the questions. Ergo, the results and the allegedly gifted and award-winning, nationally known teacher were a farce. It’s a shame on SO MANY levels. The kids who did take the re-test did fine. In other words, the students knew the material. And they didn’t allege that the test was poorly constructed. So much for hard work paying off but is that what the kids themselves gleaned from this experience? Inner city kids are not expected to do as well although they may be capable. Despite all that cramming, they did not feel comfortable enough to just do their best! It’s Math. The answers are either wrong or right. Although they may give credit for showing their work. (That’s one thing I never understood. If you can get the answer, just in your head, why be penalized for not showing your work!?) Why this enormous pressure for performing on some test? A child's education is considerably more than the results on some test! This is truly emphasizing the wrong aspects! If the test was deemed so vital by the teacher, where is his confidence in these hardworking kids? I assure you, young Mexicans work are very diligent, capable kids. The students efforts were likely lacking in other areas due to time and energy constraints. Unions work very hard to get the most basic rights for teachers which are not juxtaposed to the rights of students. Everyone works better in small classes. That’s just a fact that few would dispute. Often it is the teachers' union that is the only ones fighting for the kids. The teachers' rights and those of the students very often overlap. Certainly a School Board cannot be counted on protecting the kids! But the teachers can be counted on to take on responsibilities that the parent can not or will not assume. Same holds true for even as basic as clothing, school supplies and Christmas presents. I didn’t get a sense of Mr. Escalante getting close to his students as individuals. All for some test? For the many accolades this teacher received? And where is the sheer joy of learning that he should share? Stand and Deliver neither stands, nor delivers. It’s just a shame, that’s all!

I want to buy this movie but $13 is way to much .

I had to watch this movie for AP Calculus for extra credit and I gotta say I was not disappointed. It’s a nice movie. The story telling is really wonky and if you don’t speak Spanish you won’t catch some of the things said in the movie as 20% of the dialogue is Spanish. Overall it’s as good as a movie can get pertaining to math!

I used to always watch this as a kid and I have always loved it

The message is clear it doesn’t matter who you are where you come from! As long as you have determination and hope with a can do attitude anything is possible!

We were shown this in school back in the day, always loved it.

I love this movie so much. A great legacy for Mr. Escalante.

I love this movie!!! Brings back memories of my childhood and the whole 80's lifestyle.
