Description

From the producers of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and mind of author Katherine Paterson comes a rousing fantasy adventure about family, friendship, and the wondrous power of imagination. A perpetual outsider both at home and at school, Jess Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) just never seems to fit in no matter how hard he tries. When his goal to become the fastest runner in middle school is unexpectedly thwarted by newly arrived classmate Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb), who enters in an "all boys" race and leaves her competitors in the dust, Jess soon strikes up a friendship with the imaginative outsider. Their bond is soon cemented thanks to Leslie's love for storytelling and Jess' skill as an artist, and the two lonely kids create a secret kingdom called Terabithia that is only accessible by swinging over a stream on a nearby rope. Though Jess and Leslie may be considered outcasts by their classmates, their adventures in Terabithia find the pair doing battle against the dreaded Dark Master and his malevolent creatures while plotting revenge against the schoolyard bullies. Now, thanks to his adventures in Terabithia and his friendship with Leslie, Jess finally finds the confidence needed to stand tall and be himself.

A pretty harsh but touching view of childhood, and a great dog.

I first saw this movie when I was 7 years old. At the time I had never experienced loss. This movie was my first time actually feeling the pain of a death. The film would be three or four stars if it wasn’t for the ending, and hats off to Katherine Patterson for writing this amazingly beautiful and heartbreaking story. Josh Hutcherson was among the best child actors at the time, and Annasophia Robb definitely showed her talent. A shining point of the film is the Jess’s relationship with his father. His dad is trying, but he doesn’t understand his son, and it leads to very realistic father-son conflict reminding me of my own relationship with my father when I was younger. Quite possibly my favorite moment in the film is when Jess is running through the woods and he sees the imaginary villain he and Leslie had created, The Dark Master, chasing him, only to be caught and lovingly embraced for the first time in a long time by his father. As someone who grew up with only a father in the home, this scene breaks me. Needless to say, watch this movie!
