Description

Charlie Croker (Michael Caine) is out of jail and on the make with an ingenious plan for the heist of the century. Aided and abetted by top criminal mastermind Mr Bridger (Noël Coward), Charlie sets off with an ace team of villains and three very special minis to lift $4,000,000 from under the noses of the Turin Police. The trouble is, with the cops and the Mafia on his tail, Charlie finds that grabbing the money is kid’s stuff compared to getting away with it.

This is not just the best action film ever made, but also the best heist film. Of all the films I've seen, The Italian Job (1969) is the best. It's hilarious, cool, and absolutely timeless. I would recommend this film to anyone, and suggest that you AVOID THE 2003 REMAKE.

If you’re a fan of Michael and Minis, this is one you must see. I loved the remake, too, with the really hopped up BMW Minis, but the originals performed admirably in this one, too. Crazy ending reminded me that this was common in the movies of the era. They just ended, practically screaming for a “Part 2.” But in the case of The Italian Job and another of my late 60s favorites, The Thomas Crown Affair, all we got were remakes. Lucky for us both remakes were good, too.

Yep, the original far surpasses the remake. I really do believe if it wasn't for videos on demand, these gems would have been lost to time and crappy re-makes with modern spins. Sometimes things don't need to be re-done, and this is a perfect example.
  • The remake is better

It is okay but when it attempts to be funny it fails. The story is decent but Michael Caine did not make this movie worth while. And in the middle you have no idea what is going on. The remake is better

Though it looks a little dated, the movie reminds you of why guys lusted after the sleek cars of the late 60s. Great plot and characterization and beautifully photographed. It is also a fine example of comedic surrealist escapism of the era. The opening car crash and subsequent funeral and the prison scenes with Bridger are the pinnacle of British fantasy. Noel Coward is perfect and Benny Hill is, well, Benny Hill. Michael Caine, unfortunately, seems almost incapable of emotion. The stiff upper lip seems just a bit too stiff. But you do get the great chase scene with three Mini Coopers, the heist itself, one of the earliest examples of moviedom computer hacking, and the final cliffhanger ending (literally). If you ain't laughing, you ain't watching.

This is a classic masterpiece for lovers of British Humor AND for Petrolheads. But WHY - dear iTunes - only for rent and NOT for sale ?????
