Description

From visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes this noir-style psychological thriller starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett that’s set against the dark backdrop of carnival life. When charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Cooper) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival, he crafts what seems to be a golden ticket to success. The more he uses his newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society, the more his ambition grows. Soon, with the virtuous Molly (Rooney Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Blanchett), who might turn out to be his most formidable opponent yet. Also included in the all-star cast of NIGHTMARE ALLEY are Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman and Mary Steenburgen. Master storyteller del Toro directed the taut thriller, which he co-wrote with Kim Morgan, based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham.

This is truly a classic del Toro film - as distinctive to him as is Tarantino's work is to him. This is not noir, but more of a retro movie-length Twilight Zone. Having a sense of fatalism that begins with the first frame, this is not a film for everyone and it may not be a film to watch more than once, but for a great many it is worth a look. By the way, Martin Scorsese raved over this movie and everyone knows what happens in Scorsese films....

Quite captivating and sophisticated. The cover makes it look like it could be a chick flick, but it's not.

This movie was made for an audience which used to exist. Back when people were more interesting, capable, intelligent, less narcissistic, and far less shallow. This is a fantastic movie, and it's too good for the average audience of today. If you enjoy noir, and actually know what that means, then you should give this film a watch. It's a dark tale of horrible people, grim decisions, and unsettling consequences.

I could care less about film NOIR. This was SLOWER than SLOW. DARK. TWISTED. UGLY. I can't stand these highly stylized movies that cover up for a thin and predictable storyline. Don't waste your money or time.
