Description

New York in the 90s: After leaving graduate school to pursue her dream of becoming a writer, Joanna (Margaret Qualley) gets hired as an assistant to Margaret (Sigourney Weaver), the stoic and old-fashioned literary agent of J. D. Salinger. Fluctuating between poverty and glamour, she spends her days in a plush, wood-panelled office – where dictaphones and typewriters still reign and agents doze off after three-martini lunches – and her nights in a sink-less Brooklyn apartment with her socialist boyfriend. Joanna's main task is processing Salinger's voluminous fan mail, but as she reads the heart-wrenching letters from around the world, she becomes reluctant to send the agency's impersonal standard letter and impulsively begins personalizing the responses. The results are both humorous and moving, as Joanna, while using the great writer's voice, begins to discover her own.

Essentially the devil wears Prada, but washed down. Has a sprinkling of Working Girl, with a dash of Can you Ever forgive Me. So before you rent The Devil’s working Salinger Year, remember that this is a mock up of those other movies. Except that it’s very boring.

As always. See it for Sigourney. Good movie 🍿 for creative writers and NYC lovers. The lead actress is just one ☝️ dimensional and wide eyed throughout the film. I found myself wanting to fast 💨 forward through all of her scenes, especially those regarding her ex. There’s a scene where she’s being berated by a younger girl 👧 who’s flunking school 🏫 and the younger actress blows her away in that one ☝️ scene. I was more interested in her than the lead actress. Qualley just doesn’t have it; she’s not terrible, but she’s not compelling at all. Still, the film 🎞 has the iconic Siggie Weaver, Judy Blume, and JDS so see it for them!!!

I was mostly intrigued by the two actresses in this but it’s also just a really lovely story of New York and the literary world in the 90s. Sort of like Devil Wears Prada but for books. Recommended!
