Description

When spoiled rich girl Sasha Li blows through half of her trust fund, she is cut off by her father and forced to go back to China and work for the family toy business. What begins simply as a way to regain financial support soon develops into a life-altering journey of self discovery, as she learns the business from the ground up and reconnects with her estranged family in the process.Go Back to China is a hilarious, heartfelt, and compelling portrait of what happens when today’s Millennial culture clashes with the old school, hard working values that families around the worldhave continued to instill and pass down. It also offers an honest look at the human cost of things that are made in China.

After being a huge fan of the Always Tomorrow in Hong Kong, I was so excited to hear about Emily Ting’s next project. And she did not disappoint! After having to give up her lavish lifestyle to move to China to work in her father’s factory, Sasha hilariously encounters some culture shock and is forced to confront her roots and the family she has avoided. The scenes where she grows closer to her family and her coworkers are heartfelt and well developed. Highly recommend this film!

From a critical standpoint, this film draws upon hope for improvement of the human condition. We all pull for that. This 'story' is not a documentary or in any way have a relation to the realities in mainland China. Centered around an exceptionally wealthy, priveleged young woman, we follow her partying social life and her transformation--brought about by her father's (her sister's) demand she return to China to work in the factory he owns. This is an enjoyable story with intra family complexities playing out. However, there is no connection to reality....and, to this reviewer, leaves a worrying impression that this film is a wish-fulfillment fantasy--made excruciaitingly apparent in the movie's framing of a wildly generous gift to the Chinese factory workers. ....If only.

Really hits close to home. Amazing story with great acting. Anna Akana really shines and always loved Lynn Chen since she started out with Saving Face. She always kills it and would love to see them in more big roles.
