Description

Hal Holbrook’s “Mark Twain Tonight!” is an icon of American performing arts, believed to be the longest-running one-man show in the history of theatre. After first donning Twain’s fabled white suit and walking onto stage in 1954, Mr. Holbrook performed his legendary one-man show on- and off-Broadway, in all fifty states, in twenty countries, behind the Iron Curtain, and before five U.S. Presidents. Millions have seen the Tony and Emmy Award-winning performance, and countless actors and scholars have been influenced by the work. Featuring interviews with Sean Penn, Martin Sheen, Emile Hirsch, Annie Potts, Cherry Jones, Robert Patrick, and a host of others, Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey is a celebration of this one-man masterpiece, an examination of the joys and struggles of an actor’s life, and a strikingly relevant ode to one of our country’s most important, provocative, and enduring writers.

What a heartfelt film! It will leave you feeling closer to both Mark Twain and Hal Holbrook. The life of an actor is presumably all glamour, but this shows the challenges alongside the rewards. It includes scenes from "Mark Twain Toinght!" which are worth the price alone, but Hal's story of family trials is one you won’t soon forget.

This documentary beautifully tells the story of Hal Holbrook’s years on the road performing in “Mark Twain Tonight!” Yes, you’ll see some inspiring scenes of Holbrook as Twain, but the gripping aspect of the film reveals the sacrifices he made during the 60+ years he took this one-man show on the road. Family members were interviewed along with fellow actors and Twain scholars, and there are some incredibly dramatic scenes. Absolutely powerful!
