Description

Fire investigator Sean McCaffrey, son of the late Steven "Bull" McCaffrey, is now working at the same Chicago firehouse along with his uncle Brian (William Baldwin). When Sean is assigned to investigate a deadly fire, he and partner Maggie soon realize that they are dealing with something much more than a routine fire. The clues they discover lead them down a treacherous path of arson, murder, and international terrorism. Sean must use his intuition, along with the help of infamous jailed arsonist Ronald Bartel (Donald Sutherland), in a race to find out who is behind the fire and stop them from accomplishing their devious plans.

It’s not terrible, but an adequate budget could’ve done winders for the final product. To make up for the budgetary restrictions there is a greater emphasis made to explain the details of the investigation and produce smaller set pieces. The concept is good, Bull’s son has become a fire investigator like his uncle and tries to stop an arsonist or arsonists from using Backdraft boobietraps to nefarious ends. Also amusing is Sean’s friendship with a stray dog that he bonds with. But in an attempt to recreate the familial tension of the first film they put him at odds with his uncle (again played by Baldwin) for know real good reason. Their conflict feels forced and never adequately rationalized. Having the two of them close would have made more sense and would have invested us more in their relationship especially when one risks their life for the other. A legitimate budget could have realized much better set pieces or at least made the existing ones more impressive. The ending also felt rather abrupt. It’s a shame the studio didn’t attempt a more spectacular film in the vein of the original. The filmmakers make the most of what the had and the acting is adequate to good. Sutherland’s cameo helps in that department. Lower your expectations and understand this is procedural and not a big budget thriller and you might be amused. Two and half stars but I rounded up to three.

Backdraft 2: The Search For More Money isn’t as great as the original! The beginning needed story development...

It was a decent movie not nearly as good as the first movie. Story line was good but the ending could have been better. Was definitely not ready to be released

What a movie. Great 2nd act years later brings back the same stars and a level of consistency you wouldn’t expect from characters this many years apart.
  • Waste of time & money
