Description

With SHADOW, director Zhang Yimou (HERO, HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS) once again pushes the boundaries of wuxia action to create a film like no other, masterfully painting a canvas of inky blacks and greys punctuated with bursts of color from the blood of the defeated. In a kingdom ruled by a young and unpredictable king, the military commander has a secret weapon: a "shadow", a look-alike who can fool both his enemies and the King himself. Now he must use this weapon in an intricate plan that will lead his people to victory in a war that the King does not want.

Gorgeous cinematography right up to the closing 25 minute blood-gargling contest

it's very slow. I'm a Zhang Yimou fan but this film, in my opinion, isn't his best. I normally enjoy films with lots of dialogue and political intrigue, but this film was very flat. No spark. Never felt anything for any of the characters. Save your time and money, and rent/buy one of his other films.
  • Great Intrigue Movie

By far, the best film that Zhang Yimou has ever made. Very atmospheric, the intrigue of the plot is tight, and how much everyone knows is always a little in suspect. This is a very well paced thriller. If you are looking for a fast moving action movie, look elsewhere. If you are loking for a tangled web of desire and revenge, this is well worth your time.

  • Gong Li made Zhang famous

Zhang stages and directs masterfully. The magic of his films was Gong Li. His casting ever since has lacked charisma, and these legend and special effects works all beg for a superstar to carry them pasted the "thrills" and aesthetics. Lots of gore and blood-letting. Splendid cinematography. Not even a great score, nor cleverness wtih the script or theme of "shadows". A big, beautiful dud.
  • Drama with some Action

This movie is good, but not great. It is kinda slow but has some good action with a fairly good story line. It’s definitely worth watching if you are willing to read the subtitles or are fluent in Mandarin. If you don’t know how to read I wouldn’t suggest this movie, since trying to have someone read a movie to you is tiresome.

If you want to watch an action movie, then don’t waste your money. If you want to watch a good story movie, then go for it.

Don't be fooled by the sypnosis. This is not a wuxia movie. This is a talk fest with overly dramatic and banal dialogue. I got so bored with this I had to just watch it in 2x speed to lessen my suffering. Blechhhh.
