Now, please note, that, this is not a review about the TV Special, but rather about the new recently re-released DVD and Digital Download formats in honor of the TV Special's 40th Anniversary. Now, first off, I didn't actually buy this "iTunes" version, I only rented it, so that, I could see what this newly recent print version of the TV Special was like.
Now, even though, I am happy that the TV Special on this newly recent print version is uncut and unedited, and that, they restored Kermit the Frog's scenes, along with the laundry scene, back into the TV Special, but unfortunately, about what I just saw on this new recently re-release, it's about the 3 BIGGEST complaints that I have about it, that I'm not too happy with!
1st problem:
As of what's happening on TV today, and sometimes, but not all the time, on Home Media releases, it's with either any older TV Show, any older TV Special, or any older Made-For-TV Movie, that's in its WRONG Aspect Ratio! And that's exactly what happened! The TV Special was cropped from its original 4x3 Aspect Ratio to fit in HD screen! And it just doesn't look right, it looks like DRECK! And the reason why I'm saying that, is because you are missing more information, that you used to see before, with the cropping of the TV Special! Now, like, for an example here; during the last of the roll of the ending credits, you used to see a whole flock of the flying birds before, but right now, you are only seeing a half of it! And that's how BAD the cropping was!
2nd problem:
"The Jim Henson Company" has decided to use Digital Noise Reduction (DNR) on the TV Special, just so that, they would make it look like HD! And that, the TV Special was originally shot in Standard-Definition (SD)! And the DNR just doesn't look right, either, it basically just looks plain TERRIBLE!
3rd and final problem:
"The Jim Henson Company" has also decided to manipulate the Frame Rate from the TV Special's original 60 FPS to 30 FPS, just so that, they would make it look more filmy! And that, the TV Special was originally shot on Videotape! And the Frame Rate just doesn't look right, either, it's just basically ALL MESSED UP! And that, even some of the shots just really don't look that good at all!
So, for the new recently re-released DVD and Digital Download formats of the 40th Anniversary Edition of the TV Special "Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas", I hate to say this, but, I advise you to stay away from it! And please keep on spreading messages to "The Jim Henson Company" by keeping on telling them that we want the TV Special to be restored back into its original 4x3 Aspect Ratio, and into its original 60 FPS, and non-DNR'd!
And I do hope that "The Jim Henson Company" is reading this particular review here, because they ought to be ashamed of themselves for what they did to this all-time favorite classic Christmas TV Special!
