Description

Most Beautiful Island is a psychological thriller examining the plight of undocumented female immigrants hoping to make a life in New York City. Shot on Super 16mm with an intimate, voyeuristic sensibility, Most Beautiful Island chronicles one harrowing day in the life of Luciana, a young immigrant woman struggling to make ends meet while striving to escape her past. As Luciana's day unfolds, she is whisked, physically and emotionally, through a series of troublesome and unforeseeable extremes. Before her day is done, she inadvertently finds herself a central participant in a cruel game where lives are placed at risk, and psyches are twisted and broken for the perverse entertainment of a privileged few.

I was surprised that a foreigner actress wrote, acted and directed in her own feature! The flick depictes very well how hard it is for a foreigner to make a living in NYC - the ending presents a sick plot twist, so it's worth to have some patience to watch the whole movie.

Whoa, what a gutpunching ending! It's a slow burn but the build up to the end made me sit on the edge of my seat. Not a run of the mill thriller/horror which made it very refreshing to watch, and actually had a plot that stuck with me. Plus Asensio knows how to cause bone chilling tension, and can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

Is it extraordinay in any way? No, no it's not. But the filmmaker shows promise. I'm looking forward to her next movie already.
