Description

Norman Oppenheimer (Richard Gere) lives a lonely life in the margins of New York City power and money. Norman strives to be everyone’s friend, but his incessant networking leads him nowhere. Norman ends up befriending a young but charismatic politician Micha Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi) at a low point in his life. Three years later, the politician becomes an influential world leader. Flush with his newfound feeling of success, Norman attempts to use Eshel’s name to leverage his biggest deal ever: a series of quid pro quo transactions linking the Prime Minister to Norman’s nephew (Michael Sheen), a rabbi (Steve Buscemi), a mogul (Harris Yulin), his assistant (Dan Stevens), and a treasury official from the Ivory Coast. Norman’s kaleidoscopic plans soon go awry, creating the potential for an international catastrophe he must struggle to prevent. The new film by Academy Award® nominated director Joseph Cedar (Footnote) is a comic and compassionate drama of a little man whose downfall is rooted in a human frailty all too easy to forgive—a need to matter.

  • Gere is superb, it's a shame he's blackballed

You watch a performanc like this and you can't help but wince at Gere's situation. With his talent and track record, the man should be on the Hollywood shortlist, but can only get work in tiny productions due to his political views on China and Tibet. Hollywood is desperate for Chinese money, so they've tossed Gere to the sharks. I can only hope Gere keeps finding parts like this one and a few people actually see them.
  • Bravo Richard Gere

By yes, my name is nick
After several roles of power-players, Richard Gere really ups the ante by playing a deal-maker on the outside looking in. It is clear he knows what he is doing and is aware of all the angles, but he has no leverage to join the club. The nuances of Gere's performance are noteworthy. Norman is convinced he is born to do what he does. Kudos also to the writer/director for designing the castle of Norman's kingdom that cannot hold up atop the cornerstone.

Wow...a resurrection. David Mamet level. Gere nailed this character in the forehead.👍
