Description

Judi Dench stars in the story of Philomena Lee, mother to a boy conceived out of wedlock and given up for adoption. Nearly 50 years later, Philomena meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan), a former BBC reporter looking for his next big story. Together, they embark on a journey to locate her long lost son. As the pieces of the puzzle come together, the unlikely travel companions form a comic and heartwarming friendship. Based on the 2009 investigative book by Martin Sixsmith ‘The Lost Child of Philomena Lee’, the film adaptation has been hailed as “a triumph for Judi Dench. Brilliant. A performance of grace, nuance and cinematic heroism.” (Mary Corliss, TIME MAGAZINE)

  • Let's make it political!

As usual, with the film industry, Republicans are never liberal enough...always painted with the same brush. Soon enough we will be one party and then the "morally" and intellectually superior liberals will be satisfied.
  • Moving. Judi Dench a Tour De Force. Coogan her capable supporting player.

This film provides superb acting and great story telling. It speaks to the unbreakable bond between mother and child and the compelling human spirit to understand those we love and those we have lost. Judi Dench showcases a depth few will ever bring to the screen. Watch this. It's impossible not to be moved.
  • Weak

Weak cliche dull oscar bait that tries to overcome its flaws by manipulating emotion and providing weak humor at the expense of the woman it's supposed to be honoring. Maybe now that this and the imitation game did poorly at the oscars Harvey Weinstein will back off for a while with the award bait

The movie casts a light on a very real and serious issue that affected lives of many. I think it is brilliant that 2 main characters represent the opposite opinions on religion and some of its practices, yet they manage to find and develop respect and understanding, without denying those things that are wrong and yet not being haters. I think it is very much needed in our society. Judi Dench and Steve Coogan are phenomenal!!
  • Nuns should not have been forgiven

The Nuns should not have been forgiven. Forgiving something that is unforgivable just so you can feel better and not be angry is wrong. They should have prosecuted the nuns at the end. Justice should have been served to the scoundrels. They should have been sent to prison.

This is an uplifting, sad, and humorous movie all at the same time. A beautiful story, which I enjoyed in the movie, but have yet to read. Steve Coogan and Judi Dench act well here. I definitely recommend!

Although it now seems unreal, there was a time when the Catholic church sole babies of young, single mothers. Recent revelations in Ireland and Spain (and Argentina) have surprised many. This is a very well executed movie about the topic. Based on real event. Very emotional. Highly recommended.
