  • Not for everybody; more for someone who likes slower paced films.

For those who are unsure about who Terrence Malick is and his films, I would say avoid this film. I would say that Malick's recent films have been slower paced and the story more incoherent. But I don't think that's the point; if your watching a Terrence Malick film it's because of the visuals and the existential questions. While I do enjoy Malick's films, I do wish the story of the film was more coherent.

Terrence Malick serves up a self-righteous, sanctimonious, pretentious, piece of excrementitious cine. This movie will ruin your life. It is torturously boring. You will squirm in your seat. Song to Song, is a lifeless, soulless, empty, and just down right awful movie. What sane person could enjoy it? The movie drags and the last hour is excruciating. You can assemble a cast of great actors, and this movie has terrific actors, but they still need a story. All the countless shots of butterflies, caterpillars, tall flowing grasses, crashing ocean waves, sunsets and sunrises, whispers, secret thoughts, caresses and love-making—it gets to be exhausting, it gets boring, and it rings hallow.
  • Don't waste your life on this.

You know a movie is hopeless when even Ryan Gosling can't salvage it. It felt endless... I'm still skeptical that it was really only 2 hours (and not 4). Also, I think someone totally forgot to edit it. At all. Oh, or write a plot.
  • Drawn out effort that brings out the best in its cast.

Once again, Malick directs a "stream of consciousness" film, but unlike Knight of Cups he is able to get his top-shelf cast members to show new sides of themselves. There were some light-hearted and even comedic elements during the arc of the Fassbender/Gosling bromance, followed by the out-of-character performance by Natalie Portman. Watching Rooney Mara under the direction of this master director was a treat. Drawn out by about 20 minutes too long on the running time, I would surmise that its hard to edit a film with these performances and with such beautiful cinematography. Also note that musical elements did not quite live up to the title.
  • Totally superficial and inauthentic.

It's almost incredible that with this cast and this setting (the music world in super-hip Austin) that someone could make a film this lifeless and banal. And don't tell me that's the point of the whole thing, to capture the alienation of the characters. That is such B.S. This is a movie that could have been an incredible journey through a rarified world that few people get to inhabit, and instead it's just a series of actors rehearsing their stage blocking for a movie that doesn't exist or ever gel into anything compelling or worth paying for. Not to mention it's silly dialogue that verges on unintentially comedic: "I just wanted to FEEL something. . ." Really Terrence? Have your actors read a phone book next time and their performances will be more compelling than what you have here in "Song To Song."

If you like a silent film with music, this is for you. I paid for a rental and this was absolute too much spent to two hours full of nothing. Never felt authentic. Felt like someone threw a movie together in a couple of weeks with good looking people. Congrats! It fell flat and put me to sleep literally! Thanks for the snooze but no thanks on wasted money to watch a film that bored me to tears.

I just finished this film for the first time, and I was in awe. I need to watch it again, but I feel it touch something I haven't felt in years. A film to see, experience, and feel. I absolutely loved it.
  • Disjointed, but not totally awful.

Through out this movie you are left with may unanswered questions like who is that and where are they? Unfortunately, the story line wasn't interesting enough to make me forget this and just enjoy the movie, nor was it interesting enough for me to want to find the answers to these questions. The movie goes so slowly and often times it felt like all of a sudden I was watching a different movie because the story line felt so disjointed to me. That being said, this probably just wasn't for me. This definitely wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen. Surprisingly though, the ending felt satisfying even though I felt somewhat confused and disinterested during the middle of the movie. I feel like this is the type of movie were you just need to watch it for yourself and see if you like it or not.

Most of it is narrated. Not much dialogue. I didn't buy any of the romance. Shallow characters. No hook. I love these actors, but these are the worst roles I have ever seen them in. Malick might have thought he was being artistic with the filming style, but it's filmed like a documentary. Nothing novel about that.
