Description

A fresh take on the coming-of-age story, this surreal tale follows the artistically driven Oscar (AMERICAN CRIME’s Connor Jessup) hovering on the brink of adulthood. Struggling to find his place in the world after a rough childhood and haunted by images of a tragic incident, Oscar dreams of escaping his small town. After he meets a mysterious and attractive new co-worker, Oscar follows the guidance of his pet hamster Buffy (voiced by Isabella Rossellini) and faces his demons to find the life he wants.

Simply put, I haven't seen a movie in a while that made me feel things like this one. At first I was dissappointed that Oscar's pet "talked" but was reliefed to watch until the end to understand that that's an critical part of the story.

Yeah, there is a talking hampster. But is identified by the director as a spirit animal. With minimal to do with an actual story. Just couldn't help but address this since it's been brought up so much in previous reviews. This is an amazing movie about identity and I recommend it to all. If the end leaves you confused. Just realize that everyone in life doesn't get their fairytale ending. Which is what makes this film so great. Enjoy.

Very thoughtful movie about how gay, lesbian, transgender people are taught to feel about ourselves. Thought the swallowing screw scenes were metaphorical. But they weren't. Like that the ending shows that it does get better. Much better.

What an amazing movie. Deals with so many adolescent issues of sexuality in a very compeling, complex and real way so unique and original. Congrats to all involved. Truly beautiful and rich and compelling. Thank you.

Thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but to be honest, based on the preview, it wasn't quite what I expected - still a good movie though.
  • INCREDIBLE

Don't know why Apple placed it under horror (although some points of the boy's life are horrific), but I'm glad they did otherwise I might not have noticed this film. Incredible, powerful, and a couple unexpected twists. Even if you're not gay this movie is very relateable to growing up and struggling with your demons. The film provided enough comedy as well to keep you motivated. I relate with the deep loneliness the boy feels, but how the film was really about finding his version of happiness that is not contingent on being with someone you love.
  • NOT A HORROR FILM!

This is an Independent/Drama movie that is fairly good. Just because it has the word "monster' in it does not make it a horror film- because it is not.
  • Yes, there's a talking hamster

However, the hamster talking is just in the main characters head, think of it as a coping mechanism. We're not talking about a singing/dancing hamster that interacts with everyone, so don't let the person who left and unimaginatie 1 start review effect your decision to watch this film. The movie is abot much more than a hamster, it takes an interesting look at how one event can change and shape our lives. Beautifully shot, written, and acted, I expect to see some great work in the future from Stephen Dunn.

This is a very well acted film, with emotional cinematography, a good soundtrack, and a deep but simple plot. It reminds me much of foreign coming of age films that don't have their characters say everything, or have a clear path, but still deliver something very thoughtful and enjoyable. A good buy.
