Love Julianne Moore and she does a good job here. But the movie seemed to move too quickly from their first meeting to the illness -- and let's face it, dying isn't upbeat. Steve Carell was annoying and cartoonish. "Based on..." means just that and we trust Hollywood to smooth out the edges. A butch becomes the pixie Ellen Page, etc. Whoever Carell's character might or might not have been -- wow, what a bad play. Michael Shannon was aso great, but Carell -- whom I normally like -- hits all the wrong notes. Playing a super queen for laughs just doesn't work in 2015. And the film seems undecided about what it is at its essence.. Is it about gay marriage? about gay rights? Is it just a love story? I think it could have been much better: show the lovers more, get to know them; end with the yes vote on the pension, skip the funeral; get rid of the Carell figure altogether, or tone down dramatically. I'm disappointed it wasn't better.

This is a true story and it needed to be a movie - and what a great movie. A terrific cast really delivers on the characters they are portraying. The only hard thing to believe is that the real life cop was as gorgeous as Julianne Moore but hey, maybe she was. Anyway, watch this if you like true stories that are gripping and heart wrenching.

This movie I didn't enjoy. Far too many cliché. Worth renting but don't expect the wow factor. 🌟🌟
