Description

Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird!  It's a plane!  It’s Superman! The classic Adventures of Superman episodes from the 1950s starring George Reeves set the tone for how many people still think of Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen. Mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent works for the Metropolis Daily Planet. But with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, he also battles for truth and justice as Superman. In Season 1, Superman rescues Lois and Jimmy repeatedly while performing heroic deeds all over the country in these earnest, comic-inspired stories.

  • Superman TV Series is still the best!

Compared to all the modern day special effects we see now, I still love the scenes in the old Superman TV series when Superman jumps out the open window at the Daily Planet building. I love hearing the sound of the wind while he is flying. When the Superman the Movie came out in the 1970s I was disappointed when there was no wind sound. Although I thought Christopher Reeve did an excellent Clark Kent and Superman. Today's Superman movies are so dark and depressing. Thanks for making this old TV series available. I hope you make more of the seasons available. Also, remaking the series in color would be excellent.

The 1st season of "The Adventures of Superman" were much more in the "Film Noir" genre than the succeeding years. Directed by Tommy Carr, they were more adult oriented and much closer to the stories that were in the comics; "good vs. bad" plot lines rather than the ones later aimed at a younger audience. "Crime Wave" was one of those episodes which closely related the reason why Superman was created: to conquer evil. Well written, it is one of the few episodes I consider a "must have" as it shows that not all gangsters were dummies and would go to any length to do away with Superman. BTW, George Reeves really shines in these first year Superman episodes as does the rest of the cast. Shame the producers had to sell to a younger, more genteel audience in the following years.
  • Its a Bird, its a Plane, its the original!

Without a doubt, this is the campiest silliest single episode ever written for TV. Screwball Kryptonite politicians laughing at the one level headed scientist who unfortunately made his model to ship all the inhabitants of Krypton too late, leaving only room for the Kid. Probably so because they looked an awful lot like American politicians and funding must have been shallow after all the pork was distributed elsewhere. Interesting how these guys from Another Planet speak perfect American English. Wonder how they did that? And then there's Ma and Pa Kent, with stereotypical American Midwest vernacular that is laughable ("Land sakes alive, its one of those newfangled rockets!"). And then there's the costume. Nobody can cut it, nobody can burn it, but that didn't stop Ma Kent from making it out of the blanket that Clark was wrapped in on his 5 second trip to Earth. She must have had a hell of a pair of scissors, and very, very bad taste. Wonder why the explosion of Planet Krypton never obliterated us?? Anyway, we all get it: this is a cold-war comedy about the "American Way" triumphing over the Bad Guys. Come to think of it, we could use him now...

I usually just buy one or two shows. But this time I had to buy the entire season. What memories Superman brings back...my brother running around the house with the towel around his neck and me playing Lois Lane. Keep them coming please...and let's not forget Smallville...a modern twist of the Superman we all grew up loving.
