Description

Who is Vivian Maier? Now considered one of the 20th century's greatest street photographers, Vivian Maier was a mysterious nanny who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that went unseen during her lifetime. Since buying her work by chance at auction, amateur historian John Maloof has crusaded to put this prolific photographer in the history books. Maier's strange and riveting life and art are revealed through never-before-seen photographs, films, and interviews with dozens who thought they knew her.

I found this documentary to be SUCH an amazing portrait of Vivian Maier! I think John Maloof does a fantastic job of introducing her to the public and her amazing works of art. I could literally spend hours looking at her photography because it’s that good.
  • An incomplete and ego-driven project.

I found this to be more a story of Maloof and his struggle to capitalize on his find rather than a deep dive into the psyche of this mysterious photographer. So few people knew her, and of those, none knew her well, that the telling really required much more investigation than what Maloof was apparently willing to do. An interesting story, to be sure. But, if you're looking for a more in-depth, and much more objective, study of Maier's life I'd recommend you watch The Vivian Maier Mystery. A far more complete telling.

It's a biography of someone who may eventually be recognized as one of the great photographers of the last half of the twentieth century. It's an investigation of a mystery about the woman who took these great photographs but left most of them hidden during her lifetime. Both stories are interesting, and together they are fascinating.

This is more than just art and hidden/undiscovered (til now thx to Mr. Maloof) talent but about the way this story is told. To be able to go thru this persons life of what was left behind (which was not an easy task) i have to say a lot of sweat was shed; between her artwork which is captivating but her life and persona in this movie was captured so profoundly that it had me weeping because what you see hear is life in its purest form. We as humans have the capacity of greatness yet destruction and Vivian Maier was no different. The connection is real. Thx Mr. Maloof for putting your heart into this project.
  • Fascinating!

As a (very) amateur photographer I was quite inspired by this movie, but it was also a great mystery and fascinating portrayal of a singular and unique individual. I really enjoyed it, well done!
  • Not Conclusive

It is very difficult to do a documentary on a reclusive person who is dead. Good effort but an impossible task.
  • When not painfully boring it's disturbing

I wonder about the people who gave this movie such great reviews. As a parent it's disturbing how poor a nanny this woman was and a significant reflexion of the times that so many parents chose to hire this clearly disturbed person to watch their children. Additionally, unless your a connoisseur of photography or a an art person, the movie is hardly interesting.
  • Fascinating portrait of eccentric but brilliant photographer

Touching portrayal of eccentric individual that was a hidden talent. An undiscovered great. I hope this movie brings to light the greatness and power of Vivian Maier
