Description

In this celebrated adaptation of Richard Adams’s classic novel, an offshoot group of rabbits struggle to break from their failing, violent community to form a utopian society. With Watership Down, first-time director Martin Rosen and his team of animators created a dark, beautiful work that blends poetic mysticism and austere realism.

A family film with extremely adult themes, and yes, murder. However, this glorious, hand-drawn adaptation of the Richard Adams novel is not to be missed. The score is just as evocative as the animation, and this film will stay with you long after it has ended. A must see that, for all its gore is only reflecting the accurate experiences of rabbits in the world of men.

I’m a fan of the novel and its sequel, and this film is a perfect adaptation. The changes work better than one would think, and the cast (including the amazing John Hurt (may he rest in peace)), the story, the music (especially Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel), the action, and the animation are all perfect. I love this movie immensely.

This is one of those films that gives lie to the idea animation is only for children. This is an occasionally dark, absolutely haunting movie. From the pastoral idylls of the Sandleford warren to the horrors of Efrafa, the themes are thought-provoking. Can children watch it? Sure. But it’s probably best done with parents in the room. This is an intense exploration of society and its extremes.

I don’t know if I should watch this movie. According to IMDB it has some graphic parts. The most graphic movies I’ve seen are Forrest Gump and Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith. This movie sounds more gory than the other two. On the bright side the story sounds interesting. I heard that there is a book about this film and I might read that instead of the movie. I don’t know about you, but I would rather read the book than watch the movie because the movie sounds depressing and bloody.
  • Absolutely terrifying

I first saw this movie when I rented it from my local library thinking it looked all cute and happy because it was about rabbits. I was about 8 or 9 at the time. I am 16 now and this movie still scares me. Now just because its animated, does not mean this movie is for kids. In fact, the creators had no intention for this movie to be for kids. The author was a war veteran and he wrote the book based off of the violence he experienced and the terrifying things he saw. Viewer discretion is highly advised due to the gory sights and the intense music may also be frightening. There is a lot of blood and death in this movie.

I watched this growning up, sure it isn't a kids movie but only some parts are "scary". It's using rabbits as a metaphor. It's a brilliant movie, I learned a lot from it and it will always be one of my favorites. I've read the book as well.
