I have general trust in the content of the Madeline series. I rented a few Madeline videos for my daughter to keep her entertained. This was the third one we watched. Basically, a man takes Madeleine to live with him, claiming to be her uncle. She happily agrees. However, upon their arrival in Vienna, it turns out that Madeline’s uncle works for a lace saleswoman, and she forces Madeline to labor away with other girls, some of which are ill. They’re all threatened, scolded, refused food and care, and generally abused. Oh, and their hair is cut off without their consent! This really threw me off guard. Check out the little twenty five minute features, episodes of the show, the adaptation with Shirley Temple, and the books instead.
